IT Business Analyst

What I liked

Merck is an awesome company with a lot of room for growth. They are actively trying to grow their research and leverage new tools in the field of tech to make their business better. Though many outsiders may see Merck as an older established company, they are trying to make their workplace feel more modern with modern ideas and tools.

What I wish was different

I really didn't have any negative experiences. I wish there was greater input that could be made to upper management. I could only provide input to my team.

Advice

Share your skillset in the first few weeks and be eager to learn. You'll be able to get your foot in the door and you'll learn a lot. If you have new ideas, share them! Merck is actively trying to update and upgrade their older tech stack and update the workplace to entice the next generation of employees.

Procurement Intern

May - August 2019 • Kenilworth, NJ

What I liked

The People, the work and the industry were all key contributors to my experience. The people at Merck are very willing to take time out of their day and invest in their interns. This is essential to a positive learning experience where you work in an environment where you collaborate and develop together, rather competing next to one another. Additionally, the work I was provided gave me real hands on experience, I had full autonomy of the projects and I witnessed the direct impact on the company. Lastly, I think the working in the pharmaceutical industry is a very interesting and valuable experience as you have the opportunity to understand out healthcare system more and get to contribute to products that help millions of people.

What I wish was different

I think the intern program could have been better about, on boarding the interns to Merck; understanding the company, what they do and how they function.

Advice

Challenge the status quo, do not be afraid to contribute to the team and provide your input.

Global Sourcing and Procurement Intern

May - August 2019 • West Point, PA

What I liked

I liked how I was able to intern for a department that is not necessarily related to my major of Finance and understand what other business roles are out in the world.

What I wish was different

Wish there had been more networking among interns

Advice

Great people and opportunities. However, they do not give return offers. Even summer interns need to apply on job site when jobs are posted throughout the year

Corporate Audit Co-Op

July 2019 • Kenilworth, NJ

What I liked

I enjoyed working with everyone on the Corporate Audit team. I worked directly with the SOX PMO (Project Management Office) but got to experience projects in many different areas of the team as well. A terrific learning experience and got to see so much of the business from the internal perspective. The Co-Op also provided a much longer experience than an internship which certainly helped expose me to many more areas of the business. Great opportunity for rising juniors and for finance majors as well.

What I wish was different

More exposure to the finance areas of the company.

Advice

Do not be afraid to network with the group and ask questions. Everyone is so welcoming and are all willing to grab a coffee or even chat over lunch.

Merck Production System Intern

May - August 2019 • Elkton, VA

What I liked

The intern program at the Elkton Merck site gave me the opportunity to work on a project that had significant value to the company. I had a large team supporting me with members from the Merck Production System group and the HPV Purification area. I was even given the opportunity to present my work to the plant manager. The program also took us on two trips during the summer, hosted numerous tours and lunch & learns, and linked us up with mentors.

What I wish was different

I do wish that interns had more input on the projects we were assigned to work on. While my project was important, it was not in an area of manufacturing that I was interested in pursuing a career in. I think I would have enjoyed my summer a lot more if I could have picked a project more in tune with my interests.

Advice

Take advantage of being an intern! This is true at any company - when you are an intern there are so many opportunities open to you. I was able to have informational interviews with site leadership team members to hear about their experiences and career paths. Through all the tours and lunch & learns I got valuable insight into the different opportunities in the company and figured out a lot about what I want for my future career. I also got to expand my network and build relationships with my mentors, who helped me a lot throughout the summer. Wherever you intern, take advantage of the opportunities open to you as an intern!

What I liked

- Great travel opportunities - Volunteering opportunities - Leadership & learning opportunities - Supportive team - Fun work environment - Large network of interns - Assigned a mentor - Competitions for interns

What I wish was different

The amount of effort you put into the experience is how much you get out of it. This really is an amazing and competitive internship. How how you work will determine if other Widener students are recruited in the future.

Technical Operations Intern

May - August 2019 • Durham, NC

What I liked

Durham is a lovely place to spend the summer. There's lots to do and see. The people at the Merck Durham plant were super nice and always willing to help with intern projects

What I wish was different

Advice

Ask your recruiter lots of questions about manufacturing and sterile manufacturing before starting your internship. Everyone knows you're coming in blind, but you're going to be so overwhelmed with information the whole time, it's easiest to do some learning before you start work.

Project Management Intern

June - August 2018 • Branchburg, NJ

What I liked

I loved my internship experience at Merck. I was able to learn so much about my field and found a mentor who really helped me find the next step in my career. The people at Merck were so supportive and always willing to help. I loved the environment because everyone truly loved their jobs and were there to help each other grow. The flexibility was amazing as we had summer Fridays so we could work from home or leave earlier and really be able to enjoy the summer.

What I wish was different

I wish I had gotten to know the other interns more through activities. All of us were really invested into our works because we had real assignments/projects/meetings to run and didn't always have time to spend with each other.

Advice

Make the most of this internship because you can gain so many valuable learning experiences as well as connections with people who have worked in other industries/companies. Everyone has a diverse background and is willing to take time to teach and share their experience.
