The Consumer Protection Division of the Office of the Attorney General is the civil enforcement authority for violations of the Florida Deceptive and Unfair Trade Practices Act. The Division protects consumers by pursuing individuals and entities that engage in unfair methods of competition or unconscionable, deceptive and unfair practices in trade or commerce. The Division also partners with other state attorneys general as well as state and federal agencies in joint enforcement efforts.

A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university and one year of administrative experience.
A master's degree from an accredited college or university can substitute for the required experience.
Administrative or clerical experience can substitute on a year-for-year basis for the required college education.

JOB SUMMARY:  This position is in the Consumer Protection Division in the Fort Lauderdale office. This full-time position requires an individual able to work independently and with limited supervision. Candidates should be able to handle routine administrative tasks on a daily basis, receive direction and meet all deadlines. Strong organizational skills, excellent communication (both verbal and written) skills, and strong computer skills are essential.

This position provides legal administrative support to several attorneys and investigators in a fast paced environment, and requires a good understanding of court rules and procedures. This position may include the following responsibilities:

- Prepare forms, letters, memoranda, legal pleadings and financial reports as required;

- Reviewing and organizing documents for meetings, depositions, hearings, and trials;

- Proofread and format pleadings and correspondence;

- Docket and file pleadings and correspondence;

- Create and maintain case files on current cases (both paper and electronic);

- Make travel arrangements and reservations, and assist with reimbursement of expenses;

- Schedule court reporters, set hearings, etc.

- Maintain attorney calendars and handle telephone calls and correspondence for attorneys when they are not in the office, determining what problems need immediate attention and either handle or refer to another attorney;

- Independently prepare correspondence as required;

- Communicate via letter and telephone with public officials, attorneys, and consumers;

- Assist with administrative functions such as purchase requisitions, ordering office supplies, payment of invoices, travel, etc.;

- Acts as backup receptionist; receives and screens incoming telephone calls and makes correct referrals;

- Assists with preparing files for scanning to the archives, and with shredding;

- Filing, scanning, copying, shredding, data entry, and any other routine office support tasks;

- Assist with special projects as needed.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

Preference will be given to:

- Applicants with legal secretarial, paralegal, or legal support experience;

- Applicants who have worked in a law firm, legal department, or courthouse, in a support role;

- Applicants who have a degree, diploma or certificate in paralegal or legal assisting, and who also have administrative support experience.
