Virology/Serology Unit Manager

The State Laboratory of Public Health (SLPH) is seeking candidates for the Virology/Serology Unit Manager position. The Unit Manager is responsible for the technical oversight, management, and leadership of the Unit and its four subunits – 1) Viral Culture/Rabies, 2) Serology, 3) Bacterial STIs, and 4) Special Serology. This Unit is technically diversified, procedurally complex, and maintains a staff of approximately 30 laboratory scientists. This position supervises five (5) direct reports.

Duties and responsibilities include:
  • Ensuring sound management of laboratory operations to meet the laboratory's mission and directives for laboratory programs.
  • Ensuring oversight of policies, processes and procedures that assure the quality of laboratory testing and services.
  • Ensuring the development, implementation, and review of internal policies.
  • Ensuring sound financial management by overseeing the budget.
  • Ensuring effective management of human resources including development and implementation of position descriptions, assuring competence levels are commensurate with job functions, and oversight of continuous improvement of the performance management system.
  • Providing consultation to physicians, veterinarians, local health departments, and other state or federal agencies as needed.

Professional Credentials Required:
This position must meet the Federal CLIA '88 personnel requirements for Technical Supervisor in a laboratory performing high complexity testing in the specialty areas of diagnostic immunology, syphilis serology, virology, and bacteriology (Reference: Federal Register Vol. 57, No. 40. Part 493.1461 February 28, 1992).

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

Bachelor's degree in medical technology, chemistry, or a biological science from an appropriately accredited institution and four years of experience in a laboratory in the assigned area, two of which is in a supervisory capacity.
