Human Factors Engineer Intern

We are looking for a Human Factors Engineer (HFE) to join our team as a spring intern!
Summary
The successful candidate will be responsible for research and usability activities at BlackHägen and directly involved with the design, development, and execution of research protocols. The HFE Intern receives general direction from Program Managers, but works with minimal supervision and is expected to exert independent action and initiative to support team members with projects.
As a full-time HFE Intern at BlackHägen, you will be helping innovative companies design safe and user-friendly medical devices, ensuring that user experience is incorporated early and often in the design process. You will also consult with established medical device companies to encourage the adoption of human factors best practices. At BlackHägen, we pride ourselves on being experts and having experience in a variety of products including wearable sensors, surgical devices, diagnostic equipment, drug administration devices, and home-use devices. BlackHägen is located in sunny Dunedin, Florida.
Potential Roles and Responsibilities
  • Meet with clients to learn about new technologies and interpret client needs to consult on usability engineering
  • Perform task analyses and user research studies for new medical device concepts
  • Contribute to and update usability risk analyses in collaboration with co-workers and clients
  • Contribute to formative and summative usability study protocols
  • Plan and coordinate usability studies, including gathering equipment, designing and preparing study models, and recruiting participants
  • Note-take for formative and summative usability studies
  • Data analysis and analysis of usability study video footage to identify root-cause of observed use errors
  • Prepare and/or assist with formal usability study reports
  • Create usability engineering files and author Human Factors Engineering Submission Reports
  • Assist with quality system work such as the development of usability engineering processes for clients and BlackHägen.
  • Contribute to user-interface designs by providing guidance, ideas, and feedback to clients
  • Contribute to user-interface requirements documents
Candidate Requirements
  • In progress: BS or MS in Human Factors Engineering/Psychology, Biomedical Engineering, or other related field of study.
  • Familiarity with the 2016 FDA Guidance for Human Factors and human factors standards such as IEC 62366 is a plus 
  • Superior ability to write accurate, clear, and concise technical reports in a timely manner
  • Ability to analyze and synthesize large quantities of information into usable communications
  • Ability to interface with customers in a highly professional manner
  • Excellent verbal communication and presentation skills
Intern Learning Outcomes
  • Understand how to apply psychological and/or physiological concepts to medical device design through the context of systems engineering.
  • Develop a familiarity with and mindfulness of regulatory guidance pertaining to the development and approval of medical devices.
  • Practice good documentation practices in the note-taking for and reporting of usability studies.
  • Interface with a diverse, interdisciplinary team to accomplish project goals.
