AER0000MJ– Systems Engineer – Space Launch System Stages C&DH Interface Integration

Responsibilities:
This opportunity will provide systems engineering and interface integration support to the Systems Definition & Integration Branch/EV72 for the integration of the Space Launch System (SLS) Command & Data Handling (C&DH) interfaces for the Stages Element.
 
The successful candidate will coordinate and interface with the SLS Stages project team and personnel, the Stages Element Prime Contractor team and personnel, the SLS team and personnel, and the Ground Systems Development and Operations (GSDO) Program team and personnel as well as participate in reviews, meetings, working groups, and trade studies.
 
Systems engineering support that will be provided and performed includes:
 
- Design definition, requirements development, and verification planning for the Stages command and data handling interfaces and telemetry as well as their associated hardware.
- Manage and provide insight of the Stages Element Prime Contractor Command and Data Handling (C&DH) document for C&DH functional interface definition.
- Manage and provide insight of the Stages Element Prime Contractor Command and Data Handling (C&DH) document for the listing of the Stages commend and telemetry messages.
- Manage and provide insight of the Stages Element Prime Contractor Command and Data Handling (C&DH) document for the Stages bus profiles.
- Provide thorough technical assessments of all proposed software and C&DH interface requirements to understand the impacts imposed by modifications.
- Generate and coordinate C&DH interface requirements and related software documentation to ensure the necessary and complete integration of the Stages Element hardware, software, commands, and telemetry.
- Identify and communicate risks associated with interface requirements via the NASA Risk Management System.
 
Additional responsibilities may include leading and/or supporting the following systems engineering tasks:
- Development of key system engineering products for program/project milestones.
- Management of the Stages C&DH interface requirements and analysis cycles through the development, maturation, and control of requirements and/or specifications.
- Integration of the Stages C&DH interface technical decisions and concerns with SLS, GSDO, and Orion program/project stakeholders and with a variety of engineering disciplines across multiple NASA Centers.
- Performance of critical mission event and process improvement studies including affordability improvement activities focused on improving overall element design, systems integration, operational efforts, or life cycle costs.
- Document and control of the C&DH systems through controlling documents and deliverables which may include interface requirements and control documents, functional schematics, trade study reports, and other technical briefing and/or decision packages.

Qualifications:
 
(IU)       Specialized engineering knowledge in launch vehicle C&DH document development and applicable experience relative to space and defense systems software and telemetry systems is required.  Typically, educational requirements are the equivalent of a Ph.D., with minimum of 24 years of experience, a Masters with at least 28 years of experience, or BS with at least 30 years of experience.
 
(MJ)      A degree in electrical, computer, or related engineering field or equivalent technical discipline from an ABET-accredited university is required. Specialized engineering knowledge in launch vehicle C&DH document development and applicable experience relative to space and defense systems software and telemetry systems is required.  Typically, educational requirements are the equivalent of a BS.
 
The successful candidate must have a working knowledge of space flight systems C&DH hardware, software, and the interaction of these elements
- Operational knowledge of space flight system and ground system interaction including, but not limited to, communication, commanding, and data processing is required
- Experience with C&DH interface requirement document development, multifaceted integration of launch vehicle systems and components, and hardware-in-the loop testing/verification processes is required
 
The ideal candidate will have:
- Demonstrated experience developing and delivering executive level briefings
- Managed and/or led engineering teams, especially those composed of multiple engineering disciplines
- Outstanding negotiation skills demonstrated through complex technical problem solving
- Capability to breakdown complex problems or issues into manageable pieces
- An understanding and knowledge of the current SLS program and a working understanding of the SLS, MPCV, and GSDO interfaces is highly desired
- Familiarity employing systems engineering processes and concepts for the definition and integration of requirements as well as adhering to Configuration Management (CM) processes used for the control of requirement data/documents is expected
- Excellent oral, written, interpersonal, customer relation skills, and presentation skills are required
- Intermediate skills using Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, & Outlook) are required
- Prior experience working in a dynamic work environment will serve to prepare a self-directed and effective team player to assume the role of a Systems Integrator in the Stages C&DH integration effort
