Public Service Aide - Community Health Engagement

LOCATION: 25 Van Ness Avenue, Suite 345, San Francisco, CA 94102

SHIFT: Monday – Friday 8am-5pm with some evenings and weekends; part-time up to 39 hours week.

GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTION:

The Department of Public Health’s (DPH) Community Health Equity & Promotion Branch is accepting applications for one (1) part-time position in class 9924 Public Service Aide as a Community Health Engagement Aide.

This position will work on activities related to Community Health Engagement programs, which focus on promoting healthy retail, healthy eating and behaviors, and decreasing the influence of tobacco, alcohol and unhealthy foods/beverages. The Public Service Aide will support lead staff by implementing and coordinating education, outreach, community engagement activities, and healthy retail store redesigns on various community health areas in collaboration with the Healthy Retail SF Program, San Francisco Tobacco-Free Project, Healthy Eating/Active Living Programs, and others.
Under guidance, the Public Service Aide will perform the following essential duties:

  • Support coordination of community engagement activities with partners related to various programs focused on healthy communities, including but not limited to healthy retail, healthy eating and active living and decreasing unhealthy influences.
  • Work collaboratively with a wide variety of community partners to support development and implementation of community surveys, store assessments, neighborhood events, and education awareness activities, etc.
  • Assist partners with developing and distributing health promotion, marketing, nutrition, signage and other materials.
  • Assist in conducting training and providing technical assistance to/with partner organizations, business owners, community members, and other programs/staff on core concepts of healthy retail, store design planning and related community outreach
  • Support the implementation of direct education and outreach on a wide variety of issues to community members, community-based organization partners, business owners, stakeholders, and other groups
  • Attend community health engagement related meetings and present on related efforts as appropriate
  • Assist in the implementation of evaluation processes with partners and staff and compile responses.

The 9924Public Service Aide, Community Health Engagement Aide, also performs other related duties.

NOTE: The qualified applicant pool may be used to fill other positions located at different locations in the next six months.

Minimum Qualifications: (Must Meet to be Considered)

  • 1a. Possession of a Bachelor’s Degree in public health, public administration, public policy or a related field from an accredited college or university; OR
  • 1b. Current enrollment in a baccalaureate program in public health, public administration, public policy or a related field at an accredited college or university.

  • Ability to work with diverse community members, youth, store owners and other stakeholders.
  • Bilingual language capacity preferred (Spanish, Cantonese, Mandarin, Arabic or Vietnamese).
  • Excellent oral, interpersonal, presentation, and written communication skills.
  • Experience and ability to conduct direct outreach, education, and training to various communities.
  • Flexibility and ability to adapt to many environments.
  • Ability to take initiative.
  • Ability to work well independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to organize information and maintain accurate, timely and complete records.
  • Ability to use software word processing and spreadsheet computer applications.
  • Interest in public health benefits of community health and healthy retail.
  • Familiarity with San Francisco communities.
