The Space Dynamics Laboratory (SDL) has been developing innovative technologies and solutions for cutting-edge DoD and intelligence programs for almost six decades. Our expertise is in space and airborne IR, VIS, UV, and RF sensors, small satellite technologies, test and calibration, cybersecurity, data visualization and assurance, and ground stations.

We are seeking a senior level engineer/scientist to develop signal and image processing algorithms for remote sensing applications. This position is located in Logan, Utah. Qualified applicants must submit a cover letter and resume.

The purpose of the work is to provide cutting-edge algorithm research and development support to the Missile Defense Agency (MDA) within our role as their University Affiliated Research Center (UARC). SDL also provides the US government with research and development support required to design and deliver algorithms supporting the Overhead Persistent Infrared (OPIR) space systems under the cognizance of the Air Force’s Space and Missile Systems Center (SMC).

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

·        Working in the area of space-based remote sensing science and satellite imagery, with a focus on developing innovative signal and image-processing algorithms for change detection, tracking, and signal classification; background modeling and clutter suppression; and registration of EO/IR space-based sensor imagery.

·        Working with detection, tracking, and localization of small, dim, and slow-moving objects in heavily (natural or manmade) cluttered satellite imagery.

·        Leading a team of mid-career and junior engineers to perform cutting-edge algorithms development.

·        Overseeing the design, implementation, and performance assessment of various algorithms using various sets of real or simulated satellite imagery provided by the government.

·        Developing performance assessment reports of findings and effectively communicating these findings through written reports and presentations.

·        PhD (or MS with experience) in pertinent disciplines

·        Strong background/experience in signal and image processing, with applications including EO/IR satellite imagery data experience

·        Robust understanding of EO/IR sensors

·        Fundamental understanding of detection, estimation, and optimization theories

·        Proficient in high-performance language for technical computing (e.g., MATLAB)

·        Excellent communication skills and the ability to lead a small team

·        Must have or be able to obtain a DoD security clearance

·        Must be a US citizen

·        Must be willing to travel occasionally, as necessary

·        Fundamental understanding of atmospheric infrared phenomenology
