Traffic Internship (FL)

The individual will assist Project Engineers in traffic engineering, and/or in highway and signals design, with moderate supervision. Job tasks may include the use of traffic analysis software and preparation of traffic impact studies and traffic planning studies, field observations and sight distance measurements, parking demand studies and evaluations, and conceptual improvement plan preparation assistance using AutoCAD. Other tasks could include highway design and traffic signal permit plan preparation using AutoCAD, and other design related tasks. Depending on the seasonal conditions, the student will be required to work outside, assisting with field work, traffic counts.





PRIMARY DUTIES:


  • Conduct general research on various topics, including demographics, transportation issues, and best practices
  • Request, compile, and organize data from a variety of sources
  • Analyze and map data in an engaging and user-friendly manner using ArcGIS, including analytical tools
  • Create maps and graphics for transportation planning or engineering documents, including displays and materials for public meetings
  • Draft text for planning documents
  • Assist with field work, including photographs, sketches, counts, and measurements
  • Be familiar with urban and graphic design, including experience using Adobe Creative Suite programs and/or SketchUp
  • Assist with traffic engineering analysis tasks and other transportation engineering functions.
  • Perform general project administration tasks
  • Deliveries and other office related errands as needed
  • Administrative support or other general tasks to support the office
  • Other assigned duties






KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:


  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and writing skills
  • Excellent organizational skills 
  • Experience with Microsoft Word and Excel spreadsheets or similar software
  • Proficiency with ArcGIS and Adobe Creative Suite is required
  • Experience with Synchro/SimTraffic, HCS or other traffic analysis software, AutoCAD, and courses in traffic engineering is a plus.

o To gain a broad understanding of the functions of each transportation engineering discipline (Design, Traffic, and Signals).
o Expand their knowledge and gain a deeper understanding of transportation engineering.

o To come familiar with the staff and McMahon.

Duration of the Internship
o The duration of the internship would be a year-round opportunity with flexibility.


EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:


  • Pursing or graduate of BS in Civil Engineering, with an interest/background in transportation planning/engineering.




OTHER REQUIREMENTS:


  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and personal vehicle.




PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT:


This job operates in a professional office environment. This role requires frequent and prolonged use of standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines. While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works in the field and may be exposed to outside weather conditions. This position may include occasional lifting up to 25 pounds.




ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARDS:


This position may risk exposure to bright/dim light, noise, fumes, odors, and traffic.




WORK SCHEDULE:


Must be able to work at least 16 hours per week with the opportunity of working up to 40 hours per week.




TRAVEL:


Travel is primarily local during the business day, although some out-of-the-area travel may be required according to the needs of the business
