PRINCIPAL ENGINEER - SR. RESEARCH ENGINEER - SPARK IGNITED ENGINE R&D

At Southwest Research Institute (SwRI), we strive for excellence and continuously push the boundaries of what’s possible. The Powertrain Engineering Division at SwRI is seeking a talented and motivated senior calibration engineer to assist in R&D activities involving the calibration and software development for complex light duty powertrain systems. The ideal applicant will be self-motivated and driven to succeed in a fast-paced environment. Projects will range from production ready calibrations, including HEV, to demonstration of advanced SI engine technologies. Job responsibilities will include: lead calibration tasks for medium to large scope projects, analyze vehicle/engine data and determine the most robust calibration approach, develop calibration and testing processes, tools, procedures, and technical solutions for implementation of product development initiatives or software/electronic calibration activities, complete engine calibration and testing in accordance with procedures to meet performance targets (emission, fuel economy, power, and drivability), reverse engineer OEM calibration strategies, participate in new business development activities ($500k to $1M in revenue generation), mentor less experienced engineers to help them develop in their career and expand the team’s skill base.

Education/Experience:

Requires a BS degree in Mechanical or Automotive Engineering with 7-15 years experience working for an automotive manufacturer or Tier 1 supplier to the automotive industry and 5 years of project management experience. Must have at least a 3.0 GPA. Experience in engine/vehicle calibration at an engine or vehicle manufacturer or Tier 1 ECU supplier is required. The candidate must have proven experience in the calibration area of their current or previous company and have demonstrated experience developing vehicle or engine calibration for production. Basic knowledge of the operation of SI engines including boosting, ignition, emissions control and SI combustion/knock is required; fundamental level understanding is preferred. Excellent oral and written communication is required, as is the ability to assess and critique the oral and written communication of junior staff. Technical creativity and self-motivation are required. Candidate must be committed to continuous professional development. Proficiency in the use of MS Office products is required. A valid/clear driver's license is required.
