Mechanical Project Engineer at SOFWERX

SOFWERX was established under a Partnership Intermediary Agreement (PIA) between the United States Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) and the Doolittle Institute (DI) DBA DEFENSEWERX (DWX). SOFWERX is a platform designed and operated to increase collaboration and innovation, as well as explore, experiment and assess promising technology for USSOCOM. Its growing eco-system includes both traditional and non-traditional problem solvers with a focus on new, novel and provocative capabilities.

Role:
Serve as the Mechanical Project Engineer (MPE) in Tampa, Florida. Responsible for project management and mechanical engineering support for rapid prototyping design projects, and project fabricators. Review documentation and approve design drawings and fabrication sequences. The MPE lead will provide engineering support for the foundry fabrication facility. The MPE lead will also understand and track novel technologies and publications related to SOFWERX projects. Manage, lead, and direct ME Interns. Report directly to the Manufacturing Engineer Manager.

Responsibilities:
·         Provide project proposal support by reviewing specifications and requirements and providing expertise in evaluating cost, schedule and performance criteria.
·         Comply with project requirements and meet project schedules, performance and cost and update on Trello.
·         Participate and lead discussions with customers to deconstruct requirements, propose solutions and/or develop experimentation goals and timelines to reach their desired outcome.
·         Provide project scoping input to ensure estimate accuracy and appropriate materials and methods are utilized in an efficient design.
·         Assist with planning, sourcing and coordinating with subcontract providers to fulfill customer goals and objectives.
·         Develop innovative and cost-effective solutions in design process and related fabrication equipment.
·         Review/approve concepts and lead rapid prototyping projects.
·         Effectively communicate (both written and oral) with DI staff, customers, academia, industry partners on SOFWERX fabrication capabilities.
·         Develop and leverage relationships across the enterprise; industry, academia, labs and other non-traditional players.
·         Participate in analysis of promising future operational application discussions to assess their practicality, maturity and potential ability to be actualized to meet customer needs.
·         Explore, review, and evaluate new technologies in publications, trade shows, demonstrations, and technical evaluations (some may require travel).
·         Collaborate with industry, academia and FFRDC’s on technical solutions as they apply to the USSOCOM mission.
·         Manage graduate/undergraduate ME and vocational interns.

Qualifications (required):
·       Must be able to obtain a DoD Security Clearance
·       Generate specifications/drawings using Solidworks
·       Experience with 3D printing
·       Strong technical writing and verbal communication skills
·       Good planning and organizational skills
·       Must be willing and able to lead in a dynamic, rapidly changing environment
·       Ability to work effectively with team members of all disciplines

Qualifications (recommended):
·       Proven experience in mechanical engineering design and prototype development
·       Education: Bachelor’s in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent

Position requirements:
·       Must have a valid driver's license and reliable transportation
·       Ability to work a schedule Monday - Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm
