Internship - Traffic Engineer

Duration: summer and it is flexible based on when a student's spring term ends and when fall will begin. It will be roughly mid May through end of August.

Location: New Port Richey 

Essential Job Functions:Interns for the Pasco County BOCC Government will embark on a semester-long internship that will provide students the opportunity to apply knowledge and skills gained from the classroom in a hands-on, professional environment in Traffic Engineering. They will assist in researching and conducting special projects and studies as assigned including conducting signal warrant studies, speed zone studies, street lighting studies, reviewing signing and marking construction plans, preparing crash report tabulations and reports, and traffic calming studies. The intern will also assist in minor traffic signal timing and signal phasing reviews, as needed.

Within a timeframe that is agreeable to both the student and department, a student internship may design and complete a project relevant to area of study. The internship will mutually benefit the Pasco County BOCC and provide students the opportunity to apply knowledge and skills gained. 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:Additional release forms, background check authorizations, and parental consent forms may be required prior to the first day of Internship activities.

Interns should be familiar with, or become familiar with as part of their training, the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) and the Florida Manual of Uniform Traffic Studies (MUTS). Interns would be expected to observe and report, in writing, their observations of traffic issues, and assist staff in determining solutions to observed traffic problems.  Intern will work under the direct supervision of the Traffic Engineering Supervisor, who will train and coach the intern on how to conduct the research. 

Minimum Requirements:
PHYSICAL SKILLS: Position requires, walking, stooping, bending, climbing, and stretching. Requires some outdoors work. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds. Ability to communicate effectively using verbal, written and visual communication. 

EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE: Must be at least 18 years old. Must hold a minimum classification of "Sophomore", and be enrolled in classes in an accredited university to pursue a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering.

LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS OR REGISTRATIONS: Must possess a valid driver's license.
