The Opportunity:  
WSDOT has an exciting opportunity in our Vancouver office for a Survey Engineer (Transportation Engineer 2). This position leads a survey crew to complete topographic, cadastral, and construction surveys. The incumbent will be responsible for the maintenance and operation of survey related equipment and software, uploading, downloading and editing of survey information. This position also supports the office function by assisting in the preparation of right of way plans, right of way alignments, exhibit drawings, survey cost estimates and record of surveys.
 
In addition, the Southwest Region is also pioneering the use of small Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (sUAV) in Survey use for the Department of Transportation. This position will be pivotal in the successful implementation of the program.

This position will perform the following work:
  • Serves as the survey crew party chief and is responsible for the survey party operations. 
  • Performs all duties on a survey crew including operation, maintenance and calibrations of a variety of instruments such as; levels, total stations, global position systems and all related data collectors, as well as their associated accessories; tribrachs, rods, plates, glass, legs.
  • Prepare and assist in the preparation of Right of Way Plans, Record of Surveys.
  • Assists in preparing estimates, schedules and coordination with various resource/specialty groups.
  • Utilize engineering/surveying software packages; such as InRoads and MicroStation.. As well as computer software such as; Excel, Word, Outlook and FileMaker Pro.
  • Provide support to the sUAV coordinator with planning, operation, and processing of aerial surveys.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:
  • Previous experience operating MicroStation and InRoads as well as Word, Excel, FileMaker, Outlook and other software.
  • Ability to operate and troubleshoot survey instruments and their software.
  • Ability to lead, communicate, motivate, and train a variety of different people and produce positive results.
  • Knowledge of general engineering and surveying principles.
  • Previous utilization of the WSDOT Design Manual, Standard Specifications, Standard Plans and other manuals or resources for developing and documenting the design of improvements to the transportation network.
  • Ability to legally and safely operate a large crew cab truck.
  • Certification as an Engineer-In-Training and one year of experience as a Transportation Engineer 1, Transportation Technician 3, Bridge Engineer 1 or equivalent OR Two years of experience as a Transportation Engineer 1, Transportation Technician 3, Bridge Engineer 1 or equivalent OR A Bachelor's degree with major study in civil engineering, structural engineering, geotechnical engineering, soil mechanics, traffic, transportation or a closely related field.
  • Land Survey in Training (LSIT) certificate.
