INTERNSHIP DESCRIPTION
Background:
The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) continues to be at the forefront of the U.S. Government (USG) response in the fight against HIV/AIDS. USAID is a key partner in the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) and works closely with other USG agencies on this initiative. This position sits within the USAID Office of HIV/AIDS, in the Prevention, Care and Treatment Division, Biomedical Prevention Branch.
 
Introduction:
In support of these efforts and the PEPFAR goal to end the HIV epidemic, the Biomedical Prevention Branch seeks an Intern who will support USAID’s development and implementation of voluntary medical male circumcision (VMMC) for HIV prevention. S/he will support USAID with coordination of Safety and Quality Assurance for VMMC and other biomedical prevention services. S/he will support planning and implementation of program quality assessments and continuous quality improvement work of VMMC programs, s/he will support monitoring and analysis of USAID’s Adverse Events database. The Intern will also support the team in planning for VMMC program sustainability and local partner ownership.
 
Reporting structure:
The HIV Voluntary Medical Male Circumcision Intern (Intern) will work closely with the Senior VMMC Technical Advisor and receive technical guidance from the Biomedical Prevention Branch Chief who will serve as his/her onsite manager.
 
Essential Duties:
  • Conduct analysis of performance data and safety/Adverse Event data from USAID implementing partners and programs working on VMMC.
  • Prepare literature reviews and other analytical work as requested.
  • Compile and adapt tools for the field such as various demand creation or site optimization tools developed by countries that can be shared more widely or adapted for other settings.
  • Facilitate knowledge translation and ensure programs are taking up evidence-based best practices.
  • Provide specific country support based on experience and interest.
  • Participate in USAID's external quality assurance of VMMC services.
 
OUTCOMES
Internship Output/Deliverable:
The Intern will produce at least one technical report with Senior VMMC Technical Advisor, and deliver presentations of their data analyses to different audiences including a quarterly meeting of Implementing Partners working on VMMC and the OHA monthly call with Missions.
 
Anticipated learning outcomes: *required 10% time
  • Identify and describe the core attributes of the STAR global health competencies; defined as development practice, cross cultural awareness, communication, capacity strengthening, ethics of public health, health equity, gender equality and global burden of disease.
  • Gain exposure to HIV/AIDS programming and data science and infomatics through global health programming.
  • Apply effective communication skills across a broad network of peers and advisors within global health to support learning and professional development.
  • Develop a global health focused career plan with a mentor.
 
INTERNSHIP REQUIREMENTS
Required:
  • Currently enrolled masters or other post-bachelor’s degree candidate or completion of such within the past 12 months.
  • Experience with HIV programs as well as experience either studying or implementing HIV programs with a strong interest in learning about VMMC and biomedical prevention.
  • Ability to analyze data from different sources/databases.
  • Ability to create data visuals and/or use GIS data.
  • Demonstrated innovative thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Excellent analytical, written, and oral communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal, facilitation and team building skills, and ability to work cross-culturally with diverse teams.
  • Ability to participate in a 1-2-week field experience.
  • US citizenship or US permanent residency required.
