INTERNSHIP DESCRIPTION
Background:
The Office of HIV/AIDS (OHA) is the focus of HIV/AIDS technical leadership for the USAID and has primary responsibility for leading the Agency's efforts on the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR). In cooperation with the US Department of State's Office of the US Global AIDS Coordinator, other US Government (USG) partners, international organizations, and nongovernmental organizations, USAID provides global technical leadership on the full range of issues related to HIV/AIDS prevention, care, and treatment; manages numerous research and field support programs; and monitors the impact of the Agency's HIV/AIDS programs. In this endeavor, USAID works closely across USG agencies involved in the fight against HIV/AIDS, including the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Department of Defense, and Peace Corps. Introduction:
The HIV/ Gender and Sexual Diversity (GSD) Intern (Intern) will be assigned to the Priority Populations, Integration, and Rights Division in the Bureau for Global Health's (GH) Office of HIV/AIDS (OHA).
The selected individual will engage in activities within OHA on behalf of the GSD Branch. In addition, they may also be involved in GH Bureau-wide gender related duties including collaborating on USAID technical priorities. Primarily, s/he will focus on developing a methodology and framework for effectively costing the Gender Based Violence (GBV) services carried out by Missions. This deliverable will assist both OHA and missions more effectively implement their GBV services as well as determine if there are opportunities for finding cost efficiencies. This work will be completed in close collaboration with the GSD Branch and PPIR Division. There will be multiple opportunities to collaborate on relevant activities across OHA including but not limited to the Expanded Gender Team as well as with the GH Bureau Gender Advisors.
 
Reporting structure:
The Intern will be based at the Gender and Sexual Diversity Branch. S/he will work closely with the Senior Gender Advisor and receive technical guidance from the Division Chief who will serve as his/her onsite manager.
 
Essential Duties:
  • Gather PEPFAR and non-PEPFAR GBV related financial data to assist the GSD Branch in determining which countries should be selected for further financial analysis.
  • Support and conduct independent financial analysis of PEPFAR and non-PEPFAR gender and GBV-related program financial data from selected countries.
  • Complete a TDY to one of the selected countries to ground truth the GBV services financial model that is developed to trouble shoot potential issues. 
  • Attend program-related events within and outside USAID as requested.
  • Other tasks or responsibilities may be assigned based on organizational and programming need and/or the Intern's own interests.
 
OUTCOMES
Internship Output/Deliverable:
  • The Gender and Sexual Diversity Intern will utilize financial and programmatic data from PEPFAR and other sources to determine the cost for different GBV response service delivery models. This data will be used to assist PEPFAR country teams in planning and budgeting for GBV response programs. Additional analyses can be conducted depending on the intern's interest and the needs of the GSD Branch.
 
Anticipated learning outcomes:
  • Identify and describe the core attributes of the STAR global health competencies; defined as development practice, cross cultural awareness, communication, capacity strengthening, ethics of public health, health equity, gender equality and global burden of disease.
  • Gain exposure to qualitative financial and programmatic data analysis in the area of gender, GBV, and HIV/AIDS through global health programming.
  • Apply effective communication skills across a broad network of peers and advisors within global health to support learning and professional development.
  • Develop a global health focused career plan with a mentor.
 
INTERNSHIP REQUIREMENTS
Required:
  • Currently enrolled masters or other post-bachelor’s degree candidate or completion of such within the past 12 months.
  • Strong writing and analytic skills.
  • Experience in research and qualitative and quantitative analysis.
  • Experience working with STATA, SAS, and/or R.
  • Experience working with Microsoft Office, especially Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Self-motivated and a quick learner.
  • Able to work independently in a fast-paced office setting.
  • Flexible and able to work in an environment that changes rapidly.
  • Excellent cross-cultural communication skills.
  • Ability to participate in a 1-2-week field experience.
  • US citizenship or US permanent residency required.
 
Additional skills (preferred):
  • Demonstrated background and/or interest in gender and health is desired.
  • Experience working with Tableau is desired.
