SALARY: $1,826 bi-weekly (exempt, salaried position)

INTERNSHIP DESCRIPTION
Background:
The Global Health Bureau (GH), Data Analytics Hub is the unit within the Office of Policy, Programs and Planning’s (P3). The Hub works to organize, manage, and analyze data on global, country and regional trends related to health and on USAID programmatic impact; produce cutting-edge data visualizations, and strengthen USAID’s in-house capacity for self-service data analytics.
 
Introduction:
The Data Visualization Intern (Intern) will assist the Data Analytics Hub team with data visualizations and generating web contents for the Data Analytics Hub's website and communications. S/he will also have opportunities to support GH offices and field missions on a variety of data analytics, visualizations and data science activities, using data sources such as the Demographic and Health Surveys and the World Bank amongst others.
 
Reporting structure:
The Intern will work closely with GH Data Analytics Hub Lead and receive technical guidance from the Strategy, Analysis, Outreach, & Education Division Chief who will serve as his/her onsite manager.
 
Essential Duties:
  • Support specific data science projects on topics of relevance to global health (including maternal, newborn and child health, tuberculosis, neglected tropical diseases, water and sanitation, and malaria and nutrition).
  • Visualize USAID global health programming data and global health and international development data using Tableau.
  • Collaborate with USAID staff to generate new content and/or prepare Data Analytics Hub's analyses for online publications.
  • In coordination with the team, support missions upon request in identifying specific needs for analysis and evaluation, conducting analyses, and assisting with analytic approaches.
  • Other tasks or responsibilities may be assigned based on organizational and programming needs and/ or the Intern's own interests.
 
OUTCOMES
Internship Output/Deliverable:
  • Preparation of data visualizations using Tableau desktop software for USAID presentations and Data Analytics Hub website publication.
 
Anticipated learning outcomes:
  • Identify and describe the core attributes of the STAR global health competencies; defined as development practice, cross cultural awareness, communication, capacity strengthening, ethics of public health, health equity, gender equality and global burden of disease.
  • Gain exposure?data analysis and visualization through global health programming. 
  • Apply effective communication skills across a broad network of peers and advisors within global health to support learning and professional development.
  • Develop a global health focused career plan with a mentor. 
 
INTERNSHIP REQUIREMENTS
Required:
  • Currently enrolled master's or other post-bachelor's degree candidate in a program related to statistics or computer science, public health and/or public policy; or, completion of such within the past 12 months.
  • Experience in data analysis and visualization using Tableau desktop software.
  • Strong writing and analytic skills are required.
  • Experience working effectively in a multidisciplinary environment.
  • Ability to work independently as well as in a team setting.
  • Experience in data analysis and visualizations, evaluation methods and research, including experience with statistical software such as STATA and R.
  • Ability to participate in a 1-2-week field experience.
  • US citizenship or US permanent residency required.
 
Additional skills (preferred):
  • Experience living and working in a resource-challenged setting and/or familiarity with global health issues and interventions is preferred.
