Information Systems Development Intern

SALARY: $1,826 bi-weekly (exempt, salaried position)

STAR PROGRAM DESCRIPTION 
Sustaining Technical and Analytic Resources (STAR) is a project of the Public Health Institute (PHI) supported by the US Agency for International Development (USAID) Global Health (GH) Bureau. Its purpose is twofold: (1) Through individual fellowships, STAR will help strengthen the capacity of diverse American and low-and-middle-income country (LMIC) health professionals at all levels to make innovative contributions to global health (GH); and (2) STAR will create ground-breaking opportunities for both US and LMIC GH academic institutions and other groups, including professional associations, to create systems for open-access knowledge sharing, resulting in effective partnerships. STAR’s individual and institutional participants are contributing to the development of self-sustaining systems and tools that will produce global citizens with the full spectrum of relevant health competencies.?STAR is managed by the Public Health Institute and implemented in partnership with Johns Hopkins University (JHU), the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), and the Consortium of Universities for Global Health (CUGH). 
 
INTERNSHIP DESCRIPTION 
Background: 
The Global Health (GH) Data Analytics Hub is a unit within the Office of Policy, Programs and Planning (P3) within the Strategy, Analysis, Evaluation and Outreach Division in GH. The Hub works to organize, manage, and analyze data on global, country and regional trends related to health and on USAID programmatic impact; produce cutting-edge data visualizations, and strengthen USAID's in-house capacity for self-service data analytics. 
 
Introduction: 
The Information Systems Development Intern (Intern) will be placed at the Data Analytics Hub. The Intern will assist the Senior Information's Systems Technical Advisor in the documentation, planning, development, and management of IT systems, throughout the Bureau for Global Health. S/He will work closely with the Senior IS Technical Advisor in engaging with customers, within the Bureau, to develop these projects, following the full SDLC (Software Development Life Cycle) and PMP (Project Management Professional) and Agile methodologies.   
 
Reporting structure: 
The Intern will work closely with Senior IS Technical Advisor and receive technical guidance from the SAEO Division Chief who will serve as his/her onsite manager.  
 
Essential Duties: 
  • Support specific IT projects, including the design and development of a Bureau wide content management system. 
  • Collaborate with USAID staff to identify specific IT needs, document functional requirements of requested IT systems, and assist in the planning of IT development, and building and deploying IT solutions. 
  • Assist with CIO Governance documentation. 
  • Assist in managing currently developed and supported IT systems. 
  • Support GH's data entry, validation and reporting needs as well as conducting data quality assurance measures. 
  • Other tasks or responsibilities may be assigned based on organizational and programming need and/or the Intern's own interests. 
 
OUTCOMES 
Internship Output/Deliverable:  
  • Assist various offices and operating units with developing discreet deliverables relating to business analysis, business needs gap analysis, and systems functional design documentation. 
  • Assist the Bureau with completing Security Assessment and Authorization (SA&A) for various systems. 
  • Assist the Bureau with completing Authority To Operate (ATO) for various systems. 
  • Assist offices and operating units with developing and maintaining IT solutions. 
 
Anticipated learning outcomes: *required 10% time 
  • Identify and describe the core attributes of the STAR global health competencies; defined as development practice, cross cultural awareness, communication, capacity strengthening, ethics of public health, health equity, gender equality and global burden of disease. 
  • Gain exposure to health information systems and project management through global health programming. 
  • Apply effective communication skills across a broad network of peers and advisors within global health to support learning and professional development. 
  • Develop a global health focused career plan with a mentor. 
 
INTERNSHIP REQUIREMENTS 
Required: 
  • Currently enrolled masters or other post-bachelor’s degree candidate or completion of such within the past 12 months. 
  • Experience in object-oriented design and experience with software development frameworks, such as ASP.Net and CakePHP. 
  • Experience in database design and database management systems, such as MS SQL, MySQL, or Oracle. 
  • Experience in graphic design and user experience development. 
  • Experience in developing, configuring, and managing open source content management systems, such as Drupal. 
  • Ability to participate in a 1-2-week field experience. 
  • US citizenship or US permanent residency required.
