Data Analytics Hub Communications Intern

SALARY: $1,826 bi-weekly (exempt, salaried position) 
ANTICIPATED TIMEFRAME: 6 months 
 
INTERNSHIP DESCRIPTION 
Background: 
The Global Health Bureau’s (GH) Data Analytics Hub is the unit within the Office of Policy, Programs and Planning’s (P3) Division of Strategy, Analysis, Outreach, & Education. The Hub works to organize, manage, and analyze data on global, country and regional trends related to health and on USAID programmatic impact; produce cutting-edge data visualizations, and strengthen USAID's in-house capacity for self-service data analytics. 
 
Introduction: 
The Data Analytics Hub Communications Intern (Intern) will coordinate with technical teams across the GH and field missions and participate in the GH Communication Team meetings. The Intern will play a key role in developing the communications and knowledge management strategy of the Data Analytics Hub. They will also draft fact sheets, GH success stories using data analytics and visual analytics results, assist with presentations and webinars, blog posts and other communication needs. These communication products will be published on the website of the Data Analytics Hub and used for internal and external events.   
 
Reporting structure: 
The Intern will work closely with GH Data Analytics Hub Lead and receive technical guidance from the Strategy, Analysis, Outreach, & Education Division Chief who will serve as his/her onsite manager. 
 
Essential Duties: 
  • Support plans for a broader communications and knowledge management strategy for the GH Data Analytics Hub. 
  • Work with GH Data Analytics Hub staff and partners to gather information and write GH stories using data visualizations and data analytics results. 
  • Organize and prepare visual analytics products for publication on the Hub's website. 
  • Assist in organizing and managing knowledge and content generated by the Hub. 
  • Assist with the preparation of materials and organization of webinars for USAID staff and partners.  
  • Other tasks or responsibilities may be assigned based on organizational and programming need and/or the Intern's own interests. 
 
OUTCOMES 
Internship Output/Deliverable:  
  • Complete the development of the new Data Analytics Hub website (http://ghdata.usaid.gov). The website is currently under development and is going through internal USAID testing process. The Intern will be responsible for website content management and publications. 
  • Develop a communications and knowledge management strategy proposal for the GH Data Analytics Hub. 
 
Anticipated learning outcomes: *required 10% time 
  • Identify and describe the core attributes of the STAR global health competencies; defined as development practice, cross cultural awareness, communication, capacity strengthening, ethics of public health, health equity, gender equality and global burden of disease. 
  • Gain exposure to HIV/AIDS and data analysis and communications through global health programming.
  • Apply effective communication skills across a broad network of peers and advisors within global health to support learning and professional development.
  • Develop a global health focused career plan with a mentor.
 
INTERNSHIP REQUIREMENTS 
Required: 
  • Currently enrolled master's or other post-bachelor's degree candidate in a program related to communication, journalism, or other related field; or, completion of such a program within the past 12 months.  
  • Demonstrated experience developing web, print or social media materials. 
  • Demonstrated experience using or developing data visualizations.  
  • Strong writing and analytic skills. 
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work independently. 
  • Experience with Adobe Creative Suite or excellent PowerPoint presentation skills. 
  • Experience with data visualizations and data analytics. 
  • Ability to participate in a 1-2-week field experience.
  • US citizenship or US permanent residency required. 
 
Additional skills (preferred): 
  • Experience organizing webinars. 
  • Experience with Adobe Creative Suite or excellent PowerPoint presentation skills. 
  • Experience with data visualizations and data analytics. 
  • Strong interest in international development.
