Intern - Engineering Specialist

This Summer Internship opportunity is available to students who have achieved classification as a Junior, Senior, or Graduate student at an accredited college or university. The Summer Internship program will begin on June 3, 2019 and end August 9, 2019. Transcripts (can be unofficial) are to be submitted with application.
 
Infrastructure Management (IM) ensures the reliable operation of water control structures and pump stations through various inspection programs and provides troubleshooting & engineering support for field station maintenance of District infrastructure. IM is now seeking a student intern majoring in either Civil, Structural, Mechanical, Environmental or Construction Engineering who is interested in acquiring engineering experience to address the real-world challenges associated with the South Florida environment. 

The selected candidate will have a dynamic and enriching work experience with IM staff whose disciplines include Mechanical, Electrical, Civil, Structural, and Instrumentation & Control Engineering. The candidate will be working primarily in an office environment and will shadow IM staff as they investigate and mitigate engineering challenges spanning multiple disciplines.
 
The candidate will:
• Accompany IM staff during field inspections while troubleshooting issues with various water control structures (e.g., pump stations, spillways, culverts, and weirs).
 
• Assist with preparation of summary reports using MS Word for field station reported incidents requiring IM’s engineering expertise.
 
• Be exposed to the design review process for new and/or refurbished District structures, especially in regard to evaluation of designs for structure maintainability and operability.
 
• Be introduced to and use various technical software such as AutoCAD and ArcGIS.
 
• Assist with End-of-Year reporting and documentation using Jasper Soft and MS Excel to communicate inspection program findings to field station management.
 
• Assist with preparing MS PowerPoint presentations for and attend stakeholder meetings with IM staff and field station management in which IM communicates inspection findings and maintenance recommendations.
 
• Learn the Procurement process and possibly assist with preparation of Work Orders for contracted work.
 
• Possibly assist with use of a CCTV-equipped underwater Remotely Operated Vehicle, Borescope, GoPro Camera, and/or Ultra-probe 10000 sound meter

The successful candidate will report to the District’s headquarters in West Palm Beach, Florida.
 
Internship rate of pay is $12.00/hour and students will work a maximum of 32 hours/ week.

Employment Guidelines
Typically has achieved classification as a Junior, Senior, or Graduate student in Civil, Structural, Mechanical, Environmental, or Construction Engineering degree program at a college or university accredited by a recognized national or regional accreditation association. Coursework must be relevant to internship and no experience is required. The student must have a 3.0 average or higher and maintain an average grade of B or above in all major fields of study.
