Fall 2019 Cooperative Education Student (Cryo/Mechanical Engineering)

The Applied Physics & Technology Division (APS-TD) pursues highly innovative research and development programs in superconducting magnets and superconducting radio frequencies for accelerators to advance Fermilab’s scientific mission and help define the laboratory’s future direction. We operate accelerator test facilities and develop and build next-generation accelerators and detectors using cutting-edge technologies. We
also, educate and train the next generation of physicists and engineers.
This position will support cryogenic projects within the APS-TD Cryogenic Sector. Project tasks can include thermal, hydraulic and structural analysis, cryogenic process design and analysis, cryogenic component design, in-house or vendor oversight of fabrication, installation, and commissioning.
Fermilab’s APS-TD Cryogenics Sector seeks a Fall 2019- Cryogenic Engineering Cooperative Education Student. Under the direction of an experienced mechanical engineer, the selected candidate will be assigned mechanical engineering tasks such as mechanical stress analysis, heat transfer calculations, fluid flow calculations, 3-D modeling, and drawing layouts, checking calculations, manipulating and analyzing data, and writing reports. Assignments will be made commensurate with the level of education completed and will progressively become more challenging as school/work terms are completed. The selected student will begin Summer 2019 and/or Fall 2019.
We Are Looking For:
  • Eligible student candidates will be enrolled in a Baccalaureate program of study (minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale), in which they have completed their sophomore year in an accredited curriculum in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Successful completion of cryogenics or thermal-fluids courses is desirable.
  • Ability to read mechanical drawings and process flow schematics
  • Ability to use a computer for performing engineering analysis, writing reports, and creating presentations
  • Consideration will be given to students who have completed their freshman year and have demonstrated a strong aptitude in mathematics and basic engineering sciences
  • Students on a semester-based academic calendar are required to work a minimum of 3 alternating semesters, while 4 quarters are required for those on a quarter-based academic calendar.
