Environmental Protection Engineer I

Under direct supervision of the Bureau of Air, Field Operations Section Manager for Region 2, assists higher level engineers to gain knowledge and training in performing routine plant site inspections/investigations to perform engineering analysis of activities and certain industrial processes; design, operation and maintenance of air pollution control equipment; evaluates compliance status; properly documents and reports compliance/enforcement issues and actions against those facilities which fail to comply with air pollution control requirements; participates and observes compliance conferences involving violations of air pollution regulations and requirements; assists in responding to plant site emergency situations. Assists in investigating routine citizen complaints. Travels in performance of duties.

Education: Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to completion of four years of college with a bachelor's degree in an engineering science. Typically, the subject matter would involve the type of coursework associated with environmental (sanitary, hydraulic, hydrology, and air pollution specialties), civil (sanitary, hydraulic, and hydrology specialties), general, industrial, mechanical, chemical, public health, electronic, acoustical or aeronautical engineering or engineering mechanics or a closely related engineering specialty.

Requires no previous experience.

Specific Job Requirements: Requires ability to pass physical exam intended to determine if medically fit to wear respiratory protection and function in high heat stress situations while wearing chemical protective clothing per 29 CFR 1910.12. Requires ability to lift heavy sampling equipment (e.g. 50 pounds). Ability to utilize a personal computer with knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and Access software. Requires the ability to travel and a valid driver's license.

Desirable Requirements: Proficiency in engineering calculations and judgment, ability to understand oral and written instructions, ability to understand rules and regulations, good verbal communication skills; ability to prepare clear and concise written reports and correspondence, good organizational skills and decision-making abilities.
