Senior Reliability Systems Engineer

The Strategic Weapon Systems group at Draper is seeking a senior reliability engineer to work within multi-disciplinary teams to architect and/or evaluate robust next-generation weapon system concepts for the war fighter, including (but not limited to) advanced strategic weapon systems and enabling guidance, navigation, and control (GNC) subsystem technology.
 
Duties and responsibilities may include:
  • Analyze preliminary engineering-design concepts from viewpoint of reliability, and recommend design criteria considerations or component replacements.
  • Plan and execute reliability analysis approaches and design or test methods for attaining customer-specified operational reliability, incorporating knowledge of reliability approaches including failure models, fault tree analyses, etc.
  • Analyze projected product utilization and calculate cumulative effect on final system reliability of individual part reliabilities.
  • Perform statistics and probability analysis for system maintainability and availability.
  • Evaluate Built-In-Test (BIT) coverage and generate analysis reports.
  • Build reliability prediction models to evaluate product functionality and, as necessary, generate MTBF, parts count or stress analysis, using industry and military guidelines and models. Utilize COTS and developed SW packages as applicable with respect to limitations and practicality.
  • Draft failure mode effect analysis and criticality (FMECA) spreadsheets and formulate mathematical models, using computer-aided engineering equipment, to identify units posing excessive failure risks and support proposed changes in design.
  • Anticipate reliability related risks for risk assessment.
  • Analysis of failure data generated by customer to ascertain potential opportunity for product improvement.
 
The individual should be a highly motivated self-starter with willingness to learn and participate in a dynamic team environment while supervising junior and senior engineers. The opportunity to work as part of team developing a state-of-the-art GN&C system will provide exposure to a wide range of advanced technologies, including inertial sensors, precision electronics, and advanced algorithms.
 
 

Qualifications

Applicants must have the following key qualifications:
  • An M.S. degree or higher in engineering, physics, or mathematics;
  • 8+ years of professional experience in reliability of defense systems;
  • Expert knowledge of reliability principles;
  • Proficiency in the following data analysis techniques:
  • Root Cause Failure Analysis (RCFA)
  • Accelerated Stress Testing (AST)
  • Failure Mode, Effects and Criticality Analysis (FMECA)
  • Failure Reporting, Analysis and Corrective Action System (FRACAS)
  • Design of Experiment (DoE)
  • Fault Tree Analysis (FTA)
  • Reliability Block Diagram (RBD)
  • Mean Time to Failure Analysis (MTTF)
  • Statistical Analysis (Weibull, Binomial, Poisson, etc.)
  • Strong presentation skills and the ability to articulate complex technical ideas.
Any of the following additional qualifications are highly desirable:
  • Prior experience in the domain of strategic weapon systems is preferred;
  • Foundational knowledge and/or practical experience specifically with guidance, navigation, and control (GNC) technology development;
  • Practical experience with modeling of dynamical systems and simulation-based performance analysis;
