Transportation Engineer 2 (In-Training)

The Opportunity: 
The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) has several exciting entry-level engineering opportunities for motivated engineering professionals who want to participate in supporting infrastructure projects within the South Central Region. These Transportation Engineer positions will serve in Construction or Design offices located in Union Gap, Washington. 

As a Design Team Leader, you will apply standard engineering procedures and techniques to accomplish a wide variety of work in the office and field. Work produced by the team may include scoping documentation, design documentation, geometric design; as well as, preparing various engineering documents, and PS&E packages.
 
As a Lead Project Inspector, you will assist the field engineer with many of the critical construction project duties. Primary responsibilities will include inspecting contractors work for adherence to contract plans and specifications, performing work on a survey crew, and preparing construction documents.

This position will perform the following work:
  • Prepare and direct the preparation of design reports, hydraulic reports, environmental documents, access control plans, design estimates, right-of-way plans, contract plans, specifications, and special provisions.
  • Evaluate designs requiring analysis of accident data, traffic data, hydraulics, environmental issues, roadway geometrics, and design standards.
  • Plan and schedule location surveys for construction projects.
  • Perform field reviews and surveying of projects in varying conditions such as mountainous, desert, uneven, level, wet, or arid terrain; in hot or cold temperatures. 
  • Use field data and standard design criteria for preparing various projects which may include intersections, interchanges, grading, paving, resurfacing, drainage, channelization, and safety improvements.
  • Utilize personal computer for alignments, earthwork, drainage analysis, bridge site data, quantities, and cost data related to position duties.
  • Use MicroStation, InRoads, Excel and other engineering software to perform design and drafting tasks, drawing and revising contract plan sheets, right-of-way plans, and public displays.
  • Write memos, reports, and contract specifications; prepare construction schedules; monitor project expenditures and budgets; and maintain records.
  • Instruct, direct, and review support staff in performing complex automated drafting and entry level design. 
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
 
Required qualifications for this position are:
  • Strong mathematical proficiency in geometry, algebra, and trigonometry.
  • Knowledge of basic transportation engineering principles and schedules.
  • Demonstrated ability in utilizing correct application and interpretation of written materials such as policies, manuals, plans, specifications, survey requests, and instructions. 
  • Effective communication skills with diverse groups utilizing oral, written, and electronic communication methods with internal and external customers.
  • The ability to work as part of a team, follow instructions, and accept constructive feedback; as well as, efficiently work independently.
  • The capability to work any shift including evenings, weekends, and overnight stays to meet required job functions.
  • The ability to lift and manipulate up to 50 pounds of various materials and equipment (specifically for Lead Project Inspector positions).
  • The ability to traverse uneven and steep terrain adjacent to traffic and heavy equipment, using normal ranges of sight and hearing (specifically for Lead Project Inspector).
  • A valid driver’s license and the ability to operate a motor vehicle.
Preferred qualifications for this position are:
  • Prior exposure to design, construction, traffic, program management, or other transportation engineering related experience.
  • Experience with MicroStation (CADD), InRoads (Geometric Design), P6 (Scheduling), PowerPoint, Word, and Excel.
 
Note: This is an in-training opportunity that offers a career path and on-the-job training. This position allows you to progress through the Transportation Engineer field, and achieve the goal class of a Transportation Engineer 2. Candidates will be considered as a Transportation Engineer 1 or Transportation Engineer 2, depending on qualifications. The salary levels and qualifications for each are:
 
An ideal candidate at the Transportation Engineer 1 level ($52,332.00- $70,320.00) will have:
  • A Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or relevant field of study.
OR
  • Certification as an Engineer-In-Training.
 
An ideal candidate at the Transportation Engineer 2 level ($57,708.00 – $77,616.00) will have:
