Environmental Industrial Hygiene

The EPA Environmental Research and Business Support Program has an immediate opening for a full-time Environmental Industrial Hygiene position with the EPA Atlantic Ecology Division in Narragansett, Rhode Island.
About the EPA SHEM team
The Atlantic Ecology Division, Program Operations, Safety, Health, and Environmental Management (SHEM) team is responsible for and assessing the status of the Safety, Health, and Environmental Management (SHEM) programs.
What you will be doing
As a member of the Atlantic Ecology Division, SHEM team, you will assess the SHEM program and develop a project management portfolio of the program. The portfolio development portion of the project will focus on assessing the status of SHEM office programs.
Your role will use Management System theory for the assessment, such as ISO standards. Training and mentoring in Management Systems and Project Management will be provided. You will use project management theories and software tools to develop the comprehensive program portfolio as a final project. YOU will research the available technologies in project management to build the final project. Specially looking at other areas where Project Management technologies have been used in program management.
Required skills
  • Experience with basic safety requirements in a laboratory. The team member will also be given additional safety training at the laboratory.
  • A working knowledge of webpage design.
  • Strong written, oral and electronic communication skills.
How you will apply your skills
  • Perform simple safety, health & environmental walk around inspections, and shall notify the Safety Health and Environmental Manager when violations are noted.
  • Develop training materials in new platforms, focusing on engagement and tracking.
  • Work with the research staff to correct potential safety deficiencies.
  • Participate as a member of a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Interact with other members of the development team as well as EPA scientists.
  • Liaison with AED communications to highlight SHEM activities. 
  • May be asked to present work performed as a poster at a scientific conference.
Location: This job will be located at EPA’s facility in Narragansett, RI.
Salary: Selected applicant will become a temporary employee of ORAU and will receive an hourly wage of $30.75 for hours worked.
Hours: Full-time
Travel: Occasional overnight travel may be required.
Expected start date: The position is full time and expected to begin June 2019. The selected applicant will be a temporary employee of ORAU working as a contractor to EPA. The initial contract period is through May 14, 2020, with potential optional periods to follow.
Working conditions:  This position will involve work in an administrative environment mainly with some entrance to laboratories required for inspections.

Qualifications
  • Be at least 18 years of age and
  • Earned a Master’s Degree in Biology, Environmental Sciences, Industrial Hygiene, Engineering, Project/Program Management or related field in the past 24 months, and
  • Be a citizen of the United States of America or a Legal Permanent Resident.
