Graduation from high school or equivalent and five years of experience in surveying and CAD; or any equivalent combination of related training and experience. A valid State of Florida Driver's License is required and a Motor Vehicle Record that meets the requirements of Alachua County policy # 6-7; Motor Vehicle Records will be reviewed prior to employment. If in the past 24-month period, the record shows more than 3 moving traffic violations, and/or a conviction/pending charge for driving under the influence, the minimum qualifications are not met for the position. Requires successful completion of a criminal history background investigation prior to employment. Applicants within six months of meeting the education/experience requirement may be considered for trainee status.
 
 Position Summary: This is advanced technical work in the application of drafting skills including surveying work in the Public Works Department.
 
This is an emergency essential classification. Upon declaration of a disaster and/or emergency, all employees in this classification are required to work.
 
An employee assigned to this classification performs technical duties involved in the application of advanced drafting skills and techniques, both manual and computer assisted, in the preparation of certified survey drawings, maps, as-built exhibits, right-of-way control surveys, right-of-way maps, description sketches and deeds, road design plans, and other illustrative materials.
 
Work is performed under the direction of a higher-level supervisor and is reviewed through conferences, reports, and observation of results obtained.

Researches information needed from various sources such as surveys, aerial photographs, property appraiser data, deeds, engineering reports and available plans. 
 
Creates certified survey drawings, maps, as-built exhibits, right-of-way control surveys, right-of-way maps and description sketches and provide other related documentation with occasional assistance.
 
Performs surveying drafting duties and computations, operating a CAD system using graphic oriented software and other related computer systems and software.
Assists with the preparation of plans, profiles, cross sections, details, alignments, and illustration topographical features from written or electronic data.
 
Maintains certified corner and benchmark inventory.
 
Assists with selecting, instructing, training, and evaluating staff.
 
Performs calculation, prepares maps and right-of-way drawings as required.
 
Manipulates field data gathered by survey crews and drafts topographical features such as structural segments of flood control or road projects, and other objects whose position is important to the design of a project.
 
Receives, analyzes, plots and files data used to maintain, expand upon, and refine maps and records; reviews survey records.
 
Digitizes and scans maps, plans, drawings and legal documents for applicable use in the design process.
 
Maintains complex office records, including maps, plans, boundary descriptions, county road data permits, legal documents and similar materials.
 
Researches, drafts and reviews records of survey and parcel maps.
 
Obtains, analyzes and interprets title reports and property deeds; also determines frontage adjustments, calculates the present and future right-of-way lines and makes necessary drawings; and writes the proper deed.

Performs field review of completed maps and surveys to ensure accuracy.
 
Required to work outside, with the field survey crew, to complete projects and/or meet department deadlines.
 
Drives a County and/or personal vehicle to perform required duties and/or to attend meetings, events and/or work off site.
 
Performs the duties listed, as well as those assigned, with professionalism and a sense of urgency.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
 
Considerable knowledge of CAD, the application to survey, and engineering drawings.
 
Considerable knowledge of standard terminology, techniques, and practices of land surveying and mapping.
 
Considerable knowledge of algebra, geometry, and trigonometry and its application to surveying and mapping computations.
 
Knowledge of modern surveying instruments and methods of using them.
 
Knowledge of engineering drafting materials and techniques.
 
Knowledge of related software that performs input and reduction, survey collection, coordinate geometry, digital terrain modeling, contour generation, earthworks and design.
 
Ability to direct the work of others on mapping projects and to solve mapping related problems.
 
Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
 
Ability to read, comprehend and sketch legal descriptions.
 
Ability to write in a clear penmanship.
 
Ability to plan, organize and independently perform project assignments.
 
Ability to communicate and organize work effectively.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. However, field assignments range from moderately noisy to very loud.
