Accountant (Recent Graduate), Germantown, Maryland

The mission of the Energy Department is to ensure America’s security and prosperity by addressing its energy, environmental and nuclear challenges through transformative science and technology solutions.

This position is located in the Office of Finance and Accounting (OFA), Office of the Chief Financial Officer (CFO). OFA performs a wide range of financial services and has Departmental-wide responsibilities for financial reporting and analysis, internal controls, payroll and several other finance, cash management and accounting functions.

To be considered for this Recent Graduate position, you must:
  • Have completed, within the previous two years, a qualifying associates, bachelors, masters, professional, doctorate, vocational or technical degree or certificate from an accredited educational institution;
  • Veterans who were unable to apply for Pathways Recent Graduate jobs due to active military service are eligible for two years after release or discharge from active duty, up to six years after completing degree requirements.
This is a developmental position with promotion potential to the GS-0510-12. At the lower grade levels, the selectee will perform developmental assignments under close supervision than that required at the full performance level of GS-12. Assignments become progressively more difficult until the next performance level is reached.  At the full performance GS-12 level, the incumbent will: 
  • Perform and reconcile diverse cost accounting work, including cost accruals, financial transfers, reimbursable work and will be responsible for the application of accounting principles, theories, concepts and practices to a wide variety of complicated situations and problems.
  • Receive, review, research, document, reconcile and record all property and inventory transactions.
  • Make day-to-day decisions concerning the accounting treatment of financial transactions.
  • Examine accounting/investment source documents for adequacy and propriety and ensure that these can properly substantiate accounting/investment transactions.
  • Review auditor recommendations, evaluations and reports in the area of internal controls payroll, receivables, investments, budget execution, accruals, collections, deposits, and recommends positions on assigned reports and correspondence.
  • Review DOE field/site submissions on financial reviews, reports and analysis for completeness and ensure the balances reconcile to the General Ledger.
  • Conduct internal control program assessments, evaluations and internal reviews.
