Compliance Officer (Recent Grad)

Positions are available in the Branch Offices of the Defect Investigations and Regulatory Enforcement Divisions within the Office of Compliance (EXC).  EXC is responsible for identifying and investigating potential product defects and hazards and negotiating corrective actions, including product recalls. 

The CPSC is seeking recent graduates under the Pathways Program. This position is provided for recent graduates with a desire to work in the consumer product safety field and/or public sector and assignments are designed to complement the graduates educational field while meeting the expressed needs of the agency and CPSC organizations. 

As a Compliance Officer you will investigate whether products create substantial product hazards or violate Commission regulations and recommend and negotiate any appropriate corrective action. You also will provide advice and guidance to industry on the requirements of various regulations, product standards, and Commission policies.

The selectee will receive training and guidance in understanding laws, standards, and regulations related to investigating product safety issues, negotiating product recalls, and communicating with internal and external parties. In addition you will:
  • Conduct investigations to determine whether products are defective and present substantial hazards to consumers or violate Commission regulations.
  • Communicate and coordinate with affected companies, including negotiating and monitoring product recalls.
  • Coordinate the drafting of press release, safety alerts, and other public notices.
  • Prepare memorandum to communicate actions and recommendations to other offices.
  • Participate in the development of compliance program and case strategies, as well as in regulatory and voluntary product standard activities.
  • Provide guidance to other offices, field investigators, industry, and the public.
  • Represent the Commission in communications with companies, trade associations, and other government agencies.
