RESEARCH ENGINEER - AUTOMOTIVE THERMAL COATINGS

Job Summary:

At Southwest Research Institute (SwRI), we strive for excellence and continuously push the boundaries of what’s possible. The Powertrain Engineering Division at SwRI is seeking a talented and motivated Research Engineer to assist in Spark Ignited R&D activities involving fundamental thermal efficiency and knock mitigation. Task lead on research projects for thermal efficiency improvement and knock mitigation. In-depth analysis of engine data (cycle-to-cycle variability, heat release rates, etc.). Engine simulation using GT-Power. Participate in new business development activities. Mentor junior engineers to help them develop in their career and expand the team’s skill base. In addition to the core job functions, this position will also include maintaining a position of significance in professional organizations, such as SAE, through authoring papers, organizing sessions and giving invited lectures. Travel to customer work sites for project updates and to promote future business is required and generally occurs at least once every quarter. The worldwide customer base requires travel within the US and abroad to Europe and Asia.


Education/Experience:

Requires a PhD degree in Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, or related with 0-5 years of experience. Must have at least a 3.0 GPA. Detailed/Fundamental knowledge of the operation of SI engines including boosting, ignition, emissions control and SI/HCCI combustion/knock is required. Experience with thermal coatings is preferred. Excellent oral and written communication is required, as is the ability to coach, assess, and critique the oral and written communication of junior staff. Technical creativity and self-motivation are required. Must be committed to continuous professional development. Must be interested in leadership roles. Proficiency in the use of MS Office products is required. Must be able to thrive in a fast-paced environment. A valid/clear driver's license is required.
