RESEARCH ENGINEER - SR. RESEARCH ENGINEER - COMPUTATIONAL MECHANICS

Job Summary:

Perform experimental and computational analysis of mechanical deformation and material failure in support of impact physics and protection systems research. The ability to work in a team and good communications skills are essential. Participate in individual and collaborative research projects as well as support promotional activities for research programs. Interact with both commercial and government clients, manage tasks to successful completion within technical, budget, and schedule constraints under the direction of senior staff. Typical work will involve, through experiments and computations, development of understanding and models of impact events and development of methods to mitigate the effects or impacts. Technical reports, presentations to clients, and submitting for journals.

Education/Experience:

Requires a PhD degree in Engineering with a focus in Solid Mechanics, Computational Mechanics or similar with 0-5 years of experience; must have at least a 3.5 GPA. Must have a minimum of 1 year of related academic or internship experience; performing mechanical tests, analysis of specimens, and performing materials modeling based on experimental results. Must have experience in both mechanics of materials and computational methods in solid mechanics. Requires knowledge of inelastic deformation mechanisms and/or composite materials (fiber or fabric based is the primary emphasis) and/or brittle materials and should understand notions used in damage modeling. Must have experimental experience or have experience writing software, preferably both; knowledge of FORTRAN and/or C and/or Matlab is beneficial. Must have skills with mathematics used in continuum modeling. Background in fluid mechanics is beneficial. Must be motivated, able to learn rapidly, creative, adaptable, and willing to pursue new ideas with minimal supervision. The ability to work in a team is essential; strong communication skills are required. Writing and verbal skills for technical reports, presentations to clients, and journal papers are required. A valid/clear driver's license is required.
This position requires passing the test.
