Mechanical Engineer

Company Overview:
Hibbing Taconite is a leading iron ore mining company which began production in 1976 and has an annual plant capacity of 8.0 million tons of iron ore. ArcelorMittal, US Steel and Cleveland-Cliffs are partners in Hibbing Taconite, with ArcelorMittal owning a majority stake. 
  
Cliffs Mining Company is the current manager of Hibbing Taconite joint venture. In August 2019, ArcelorMittal USA will assume the role of manager and at that time Hibbing Taconite employees will join the ArcelorMittal USA Team under ArcelorMittal Hibbing Management LLC. 
Purpose of the Role:
To provide site mechanical engineering services and support in order to complete capital and sustaining operating projects.
 
Typical Tasks Specific to this Role
  • Provide mechanical engineering support for capital projects and site maintenance, operations, and safety improvements.
  • Perform engineering design and analysis for mechanical and structural parts and systems for the site. Prepare detailed drawings for fabrication, construction, and installations as required.
  • Solicit and obtain external multidisciplinary engineering services for the site departments as necessary.
  • Plan major maintenance work to be completed during scheduled shut downs. Coordinate with the maintenance planners and operating staff involved as required.
  • Develop and manage a long-range infrastructure maintenance plan and perform/participate in engineering and technical audits; deliver audit findings and corrective action plan(s); coordinate repairs and reconstruction work.. 
  • Assist departments with advice on RFA writing. Supply drawings and quotes as appropriate and help structure the project justification developed by the department.
  • Solicit and obtain construction services for projects as necessary. Manage contractors during projects to ensure work is completed in accordance with specifications and safety requirements. Take corrective action as required. 
  • Store and manage drawings, equipment information, and all project documents for future use.
  • Provide technical advice to the department and site
  • Provide project update reports as required and ensure work being done is prioritized with input from Section Managers and Plant department leadership. 
 
Education Needed: B.S. in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent
 
Experience Needed: 5-7 years’ experience in mechanical engineering preferred; work in a mining/mineral processing operation desirable; familiarity with Solidworks, AutoCAD, and Microsoft Office.
 
Other: Current Professional Engineering license in MN, or ability to earn license within (1) year.
