Audio Applications Engineer

We are a research lab within Ford that is investigating advanced speech and audio technologies. The candidate will be involved with developing expertise in advanced audio concepts for Ford’s future products. They will develop proof-of-concepts (POCs) related to technologies such as in-car communication (ICC), creation of individual sound zones, etc. They will also have the responsibility to define and design the necessary electrical architecture for supporting the various audio technologies. They will be responsible for understanding the interfaces and influences of these technologies on both the speech recognition and hands-free phone call systems.
 
The ideal candidate will have exceptional programming skills in Matlab and/or Python. Experience with audio development platforms like Audio Weaver and Sigma Studio is a plus. Having demonstrated the ability to deliver new technologies into a vehicle would also be of great benefit. The candidate should enjoy working in close-knit, collaborative environments. We are looking for exceptionally creative, motivated and talented computer science and electrical engineers to join our team. We collaborate extensively within Ford and with external partners, thus we require excellent communication and collaborative skills.
 
This position is located at Ford’s Research and Innovation Center in Dearborn, MI.

 
Responsibilities
 
  • Lead and develop new car audio concepts from initial concept to application ready status
  • Interface with audio technology suppliers, universities, etc.
  • Develop and demonstrate advanced audio concepts through Proof of Concepts (POCs)
  • Develop automotive electrical architectures for audio concepts and systems
  • Interface with forward model design and release engineers.
  • Develop quality documents such as FMEAs, P-diagrams, boundary diagrams, etc. for new technologies
Basic Qualifications
 
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Acoustics or related Engineering Degree
  • 2+ years of experience with Matlab and/or Python and DSP theory
  • 2+ years of experience with audio systems
Preferred Qualifications
 
  • 2+ years of experience with car audio/infotainment systems
  • 2+ years of experience developing automotive electrical architectures for audio amplifiers, head units, infotainment systems, etc.
  • 2+ years of experience working with automotive audio suppliers
  • 2+ years of experience supporting and leading technical design reviews for car audio systems
  • 2+ years of experience with six-sigma practices such as FMEA, P-diagram, boundary diagram, etc., development
  • 2+ years of experience developing engineering specifications for car audio related products
  • Strong record of intensive, collaborative projects
  • Desire to make an impact on product
  • Strong affinity for self-directed learning: if you don’t know something, you find out quickly
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills
  • Experience with audio/DSP development platforms like Audio Weaver and Sigma Studio
