ELP Engineer Internship Summer 2020

Note: National Instruments does not petition for H-1B status from student visas for this position. 
 
The Engineering Leadership Program (ELP) Internship is a 12 weeklong opportunity at National Instruments designed to give current college students a preview of the ELP program that we offer to full-time employees after college, work on projects that impact the business objectives at National Instruments, and develop relationships with other college students interested in pursuing similar career goals. The National Instruments Engineering Leadership Program is designed for new engineering college graduates with an interest in developing their leadership skills and pursuing long term leadership roles across the Marketing, Product Planning, R&D, Sales, & Support organizations at NI. 

You will spend the first 2-3 weeks of the summer onboarding into NI and learning the tools you need for the rest of the summer. You will then spend the following 9 – 10 weeks working through objectives with one of the business functions that has an ELP Rotation (Marketing, Product Planning, R&D, Sales, & Support). Throughout the summer you will also learn professional and leadership skills through a curriculum that has been designed by the ELP Leadership team that we believe will help accelerate your effectiveness during your time here at NI and into your future endeavours.  

The Role and Responsibilities:  
  • Learn and drive growth in your communication, self-awareness, and project management skills
  • Meet objectives outlined through functional project with Marketing, Product Planning, R&D, Sales, or Support organization
Functional Project in Support 
  • Demonstrate ability to develop deep knowledge on NI products, platform, and customer engagement strategy through self-paced learning and networking. 
  • Understand customer problems or challenges, find creative technical post-sales solutions to maximize customer satisfaction, and work with customers through follow up to provide a great user experience. 
  • Demonstrate ability to work cross functionally and prioritize tasks in capstone project. 
Functional Project in Sales 
  • Learn sales best practices and skills used across the sales organization at NI
  • Collaborate with account manager to define and execute a project that will impact their territory goals. This could include things such as applying sales skills to come up with a customer list and prospect customer list at defined accounts, define value statements for target accounts, impact pipeline strategy through knowledge learned, etc. 
Functional Project in Marketing
  • Develop an understanding of NI's products and their value in defined market spaces.
  • Work on defined project to create and/or refine marketing content around a key product or customer need.
Functional Project in R&D
  • Develop an understanding of technical development best practices at NI.
  • Execute a technical project within a specified group (Hardware or Software) in order to demonstrate understanding of key development best practices.
Functional Project in Product Planning
  • Learn about and determine how to analyze customer needs in a specific area at NI.
  • Work with a Product Planner to understand the process of defining a product road map and work on a defined project to drive towards business objectives on a current product road map.
 

Qualifications

  Basic Qualifications 
  • Working on Bachelor’s or Master of Science with preferred majors in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science 
  • Will consider majors in Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Engineering Physics, Physics, or Robotics Engineering (or similar degree) 
  • Minimum cumulative (overall) BS GPA 3.0; Minimum cumulative (overall) MS GPA 3.5 

  • Must be able to handle multiple tasks and take initiative to complete projects 
  • Technical aptitude and a fundamental understanding of electronics and high-level programming languages (C, C++, etc.) 
  • Fluent spoken and written English
  • Interested in a long-term leadership role in the following organizations: Marketing, Product Planning, R&D, Sales, Support 
Preferred Qualifications 
  • Ability to problem solve through analyzing the situation and thinking creatively 
  • Enjoys working with people and contributing to team success as well as working tenaciously in order to meet or exceed personal goals  
  • Willing to put self in unfamiliar situations in order to learn and to identify new opportunities  
  • Strong customer focus that influences decision making
