The Management Trainee (MT) Program is specifically designed to develop leaders that will drive the future of our organization. This program begins with a two week orientation at our corporate headquarters in Fort Worth, Texas. During this time, MTs receive a company overview, interact with company leaders, and develop skills for a successful career. Additional training will vary by department. With hard work, the desire to learn, and the ability to develop relationships, career opportunities are endless. 
 
The Operations Management Trainee position is a leadership role at BNSF Railway. These individuals lead a diverse workgroup to safely and efficiently accomplish work assignments and goals that are in line with the company's vision.
 
Relocation assistance may be provided to those who are moving more than 50 driving miles from their permanent residence.
 
 
Anticipated Start Date: January, June or September 2020
Salary Range: $69,000

RELOCATION: A candidate can be relocated to any location across the BNSF system (see System Map on www.bnsf.com). An ideal candidate should be very flexible regarding location. Work assignment could place a Management Trainee anywhere on BNSF's operating system. The training location might differ from the permanent location at the conclusion of training.
 
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Management Trainees will be assigned to a mechanical facility at any location on the BNSF system.
 
Training for Mechanical Management Trainees is a 6 month-long program. This opportunity begins with a two-week comprehensive orientation at BNSF Corporate Headquarters in Fort Worth, Texas. Following orientation, the trainee will complete one week at the BNSF Technical Training Center (TTC) in Overland Park, Kansas for safety and technical training. The remainder of the program is completed in the field and at training locations
Overall, the trainee will learn to manage mechanical shop and field operations, work on projects, and prepare for a field operations supervisory position.
 
Upon completion of training, key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Directly supervise shop craft employees to safely execute terminal or shop operating plan.
  • Ensure labor and equipment is positioned to inspect, test and repair equipment to meet the needs of the daily plan.
  • Prepare and conduct job safety briefings with employees.
  • Provide periodic updates to General Foreman to ensure daily plan requirements are met.
  • Provide technical support to apprentice employees.
  • Ensure compliance with BNSF’s employment policies, safety rules, scheduled agreements and Association of American Railroads (AAR)/Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) regulations.

***This role is a management role in which individuals will be expected to lead others in the maintenance and inspection of locomotives and freight cars. This role does not involve design of railcars, locomotives or other equipment.
 
WORKING CONDITIONS:
  • Indoors and outdoors on a regular basis in extreme weather conditions (hot, cold, rain, snow, and sleet).
  • Environment requires personal protective equipment (i.e. hard hat, safety vest, safety glasses, and gloves provided by BNSF).
  • Work around heavy and moving machinery.
 
HOURS OF WORK:
  • Hours are irregular with a minimum of 40 hours per week.
  • Schedule involves nights, weekends, and holidays, as BNSF is a 24 x 7 work environment.
 
SPECIFIC REQUIREMENT
  • Must have reliable transportation to and from work.
 
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
  • 2.70 or higher cumulative GPA with a degree in Engineering or Construction Management OR a 3.0 or higher cumulative GPA with a non-Engineering degree. 
  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor's or Graduate degree from an accredited university to be completed prior to hire OR have obtained a degree within the past three (3) years.
  • Less than three (3) years of work experience in a professional work environment. When calculating work experience, EXCLUDE internships or positions held while in high school or college.
  • Authorization to work in the US without Company sponsorship now AND in the future.
  • Able to work a minimum of 40 hours per week or more as business need requires
  • Ability to work nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Ability to relocate within the BNSF Railway operating system to start and/or upon career progression and/or business need.
  • Able to walk on uneven terrain
  • Able to travel approximately 10-20%
  • Valid Driver’s License.
 
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Degree in General, Mechanical, Industrial, Electrical, or Civil Engineering OR a similar technical program.
  • Experience working in an engineering, manufacturing, factory or technical environment.
  • Proven leadership experience and excellent oral and written communication skills.
