Aircraft Systems Design Intern (Mechanical - Olathe, KS - 2020)

Our avionics systems are taking off, so we’re looking to board a full-time Aircraft Systems Design Intern at our Hangar in New Century, Kansas. In this role, you will be responsible for assisting in the mechanical/structural installation design of Garmin avionics/autopilots systems such as GFC500/GFC600 on General Aviation and Business Aviation aircraft. This entails assisting with the development and installation of mechanical/structural components as necessary to assure proper form, fit and function. The Aircraft Mechanical Design Intern will also assist with the preparation of drawings and other technical data needed to define the mechanical/structural aspects of the installation. Other essential functions include: 
  • Assist in the development and design of avionics and flight control systems components and installations
  • Assist in the generation of mechanical/structural part and installation drawings required to support STC projects
  • Assist in the preparation and verification of new installation documentation 
  • Assist in the generation of certification ground and bench test plans 
  • Assist in creation of certification test reports and other compliance data for submissions to the FAA
  • Accept and complete projects and other miscellaneous aircraft engineering duties as assigned

Qualifications
Qualified candidates will have completed coursework in Mechanical Engineering or Aerospace Engineering; or sufficient relevant experience. Other requirements include: 
  •  Excellent academics (cumulative GPA greater than or equal to 3.0 as a general rule) 
  • Must possess proficiency in AutoCAD, Solidworks or other 3-D modeling software and Microsoft Office products 
  • Must be detail-oriented
  • Must have the ability to work proactively and effectively with minimal supervision
  • Must be able to prioritize and multi-task in a flexible, fast paced and challenging environment
  • Must demonstrate strong and effective verbal, written, and interpersonal communication

Candidates who have excellent academics (composite GPA greater than or equal to 3.5), knowledge of aircraft structures and mechanical systems (flight controls), understanding of commercial avionics interface standards and their installation and previous work or internship experience in design and certification of avionics systems installations is highly preferred.
