Career Start Project Engineer


Position Summary:

The Career Start Project Engineer participates in Suffolk’s two-year career development program, Career Start. This program consists of three eight-month rotations in Project Management, Estimating and Field Operations.

Reports To:                Project Manager, Estimator, Superintendent

Direct Reports:          N/A

Location:                   Varies

Status:                       Full Time/Exempt Salary

Years Experience:      0-2 years


Estimating Responsibilities:

Manage and update Subcontractor database.
Assist with assembling Bid Documents for pricing.
Document Take-off’s:
  • Review specification and develop preliminary scope
  • Utilize estimating software
  • Set parameters and perform take-off using spreadsheets
  • Develop bid clarifications and RFI’s
  • Participate in the project “Walk-Through” as required.
  • Discuss project logistics and coordinate trade duration (with trade partners) for input to the Project Schedule
Develop and submit scope sheet for subcontractor pricing.
Develop and submit detailed estimate and assist with Subcontractor pricing.
Develop and maintain client relations.
Participate in Architect/Owner Meetings.
Assist with Preparation of “Hard Bids”, RFPs, and budgets.
Assist in writing:
  • Qualifications and Assumptions for Contract
  • Establishing the Accepted Value Engineering
  • Establishing the Alternate Pricing
Input and track historical database including pricing and quantities.


Field Operations Responsibilities:

Own document control process.
Manage quality control process.
Lead punch list process.
Assist with site logistics and enforce Construction Management Plan.
Drive Suffolk safety culture.
Assist with the Baseline Schedule updates.
Create the Daily Report.
Own project documentation process including photos, videos, etc.
Develop and maintain relationships with trade partners.
Coordinate with trade partners on return documents in a timely manner.
Utilize schedule to coordinate trades.
Record and track meeting minutes and manage documentation process.
Facilitate communication between trade partners and Project Managers.
Maintain relations with owner architects.
Coordinate mobilization of trade partners.
Obtain and file permits for projects.
Execute Suffolk’s QAQC program including benchmarks for delivery and inspection.
Utilize software including but not limited to BIM360 and Procore.


Project Management Responsibilities:

Create Change Orders and understand the processes and procedures around them.
Manage collection and organization of site samples and shop drawings.
Manage project documentation process including creating and submitting RFIs to architect.
Drive communication between trade partners and architects/engineers.
Cross-analyze submittals with specifications and contract documents to ensure quality.
Gain a basic understanding of contract documents.
Assist with the owner and trade partner requisition process.
Work with the team to develop O&M Manuals and as-built warranty information.
Participate in project meetings.
Engage in pull planning meetings and coordinate with trade partners to drive Lean construction processes.



Qualifications:

Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent construction management experience
Demonstrated leadership skills and aptitude.
Must be able to travel throughout the US during the initial 2-year program (up to 100% of time)


Physical Demands and Work Environment:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit for long periods of time; talk or hear; perform fine motor, hand and finger skills in the use of a keyboard, telephone, or writing. The employee is frequently required to stand; walk; and reach with arms and/or hands. Specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus. The employee will spend their time in an office environment with a quiet to moderate noise level.
