Summer 2020 Mechanical Engineering Internship

A Day in the Life of a Mechanical Intern
As an intern working with the Mechanical team, you will gain real life work experience during your college academic career. You will develop skills related to managing hourly employees that maintain, repair, and overhaul our extensive fleet of rail cars and locomotives. Interns will be placed by the department in one of three settings – locomotive shop, car shop, or office. You will become familiar with the compliance standards of NS, the Association of American Railroads and the Federal Railroad Administration. You will also be a part of various process improvement efforts throughout Norfolk Southern. If you are looking for a fast paced environment where no two days are the same, this could be an amazing start to your Norfolk Southern career. 
 
What Makes a Successful Intern? 
  • Must have knowledge and operational skills in AutoCAD combined with literacy of some computer software applications
  • Knowledge of Windows, Access, Excel, and Word is preferred
  • Willing to study reference material to resolve problems, make suggestions for improvements, and design projects is imperative to your success in this program
  • General hands-on knowledge of mechanical and electrical equipment is preferred

  
Compensation
  • Freshman (27 or fewer credits) - $2,500/month
  • Sophomore (28 to 59 credits) - $2,800/month
  • Junior (60 to 89 credits) - $3,000 /month
  • Senior (90 or more credits) - $3,300/month
  • Graduate Student - $3,666/month
*Living stipend of $850/month is available to those who qualify.
