Quantum Computing Developer (Summer 2020 PHD)

From contributing to the open-source Qiskit framework, to fundamental research in quantum computing, to helping people understand the relevance of quantum computing, IBM Q interns gain valuable skills and experiences essential for future professional opportunities as well as continued studies

Your Role and Responsibilities
IBM Q is an industry-first initiative to build universal quantum computers for business, engineering, and science. With a worldwide network of Fortune 500 companies, academic institutions, researchers, educators, and enthusiasts, we are committed to driving innovation for our clients in the IBM Q Network and the extended IBM Q Community. The IBM Q team is recruiting software developers, user experience designers, and community builders who will help advance the field of quantum computing and explore applications to make quantum computing broadly usable and accessible.

We are now accepting applications for graduate student developers (including software developers, user experience designers, and community builders) to become IBM Q interns and work with a team of researchers, engineers, and other developers, designers, and community builders to drive research and development of the industry's most advanced quantum computing hardware and software and advance the entire quantum computing technology stack by exploring applications to make quantum computing broadly usable and accessible. IBM Q interns will have the opportunity to focus on experiments, theory, software, or community building. Areas of development could include quantum software architecture, quantum algorithms, quantum software development, quantum community building, and quantum user experience design (among other areas).

Graduate students from around the world with varying backgrounds and professional interests and curiosities are encouraged to apply for this unique paid internship experience. The IBM Q internship program connects students with each other, with university programs, with IBM Q Network organizations, and with IBM Q Community members. From contributing to the open-source Qiskit framework, to fundamental research in quantum computing, to helping people understand the relevance of quantum computing, students will have the opportunity to gain valuable skills and experiences essential for future professional opportunities as well as continued studies.

IBM Q interns will have the opportunity to:

• Learn how companies conduct quantum computing research
• Work on meaningful problems in the field of quantum computing
• Receive mentorship from IBM researchers and others
• Collaborate with peers working in the field of quantum computing
• Get access to state-of-the-art quantum processors and devices at IBM
• Gain a broad experience in quantum research, from fundamental to applied
• Get exposure to the wide range of research happening at IBM
• Receive training on Qiskit and mentorship on contributing to open source

Candidates currently enrolled in graduate programs are encouraged to apply. Recommendation letters are not mandatory but are very helpful. Summer 2020 interns will work out of the IBM Research lab in Yorktown Heights, New York for up to twelve weeks from June through August (housing or housing stipend, transportation, and some meals will be provided). Candidates will have an opportunity to discuss specific timing and academic calendars as part of the application process. Depending on the role, some travel may be involved to IBM Q Network and IBM Q Community events such as Qiskit Camp.

Required Technical and Professional Expertise
• Experience in a graduate or undergraduate program related to quantum computing or other applicable area of study
• Experience in research, engineering, software development, design, community building, or other applicable area
• Quantum computing fundamentals through formal education or informal exposure

Preferred Technical and Professional Expertise
• Experience with the Python programming language
• Use of (or exposure to) the Qiskit quantum computing framework
• Participation in the Qiskit Advocates Program
• Coursework or projects in quantum information, computation, or algorithms
