Civil/Structure Engineering 1

Position Summary:
Perform a variety of civil and structural engineering assignments to support project requirements and the development, design, installation, operations and maintenance of facility systems that are located at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center, Florida on the Base Operations and Spaceport Services (BOSS) Contract. The specific types of facilities which these systems are located at and adjacent to include space flight hardware processing facilities, launch pad support facilities, Engineering and Administrative Support buildings and other types of industrial facilities. Projects range from simple single-discipline to complex multi-discipline.
 
Primary Responsibilities:
·        Must have a solid foundation in basic engineering principles. 
·        With supervision and training, responsible for developing the concept, basis of design and technical design solutions to maintain operability of assigned systems and components.
·        Familiarity with the general engineering principles that are required to be able to assess and design, with supervision and training, the following: steel, concrete, timber and masonry building systems and components; miscellaneous structures; bridge (movable and fixed span) structural systems and components and various types of towers.
·        Familiarity with the general engineering principles that are required to be able to assess and design, with supervision and training, the following: roadways and traffic control devices; stormwater management systems; ADA accessibility components; water distribution systems; sanitary sewer collection systems; other site utilities and other civil engineering systems and components.
·        Designs include the preparation of drawings or sketches, technical specifications, and Statements of Work.
·        Coordinate with and support other Design Engineers, Operations and Maintenance staff.
·        Perform field inspections of civil and structural components and systems; develop reports to document the existing conditions, issues, findings and engineering recommendations.
·        Ensure that assigned projects and tasks are completed on time and within approved scope and budget.
·        Apply cost effective repairs, upgrades or replacements.
·        Provide technical support to ROM (Rough Order of Magnitude) estimates for projects, as well as risk assessments to support proper project prioritization.
·        Participate in System Health and Readiness Program (SHARP) team activities.
·        Verify and comply with engineering documentation standards and test procedures.
·        Perform other position-related duties as assigned.
 
Qualifications and Abilities: 
·        Bachelors of Science degree in Civil or Structural Engineering from an ABET accredited program and 0-1 years of experience in the areas defined in this job posting. It is preferred, but not required, to have taken and passed the Fundamental of Engineering (FE) exam.
·        Possess a working knowledge of computer systems and integrated software application programs – including Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and Powerpoint – as well as structural and civil-related design and analysis programs.
·        Good communication and analytical skills.
·        May require some occasional travel.
·        May require the ability to pass and maintain a Security Clearance.
·        Must be a citizen of the United States.
 
Work Environment:
This position involves the following work typical of an office environment with no unusual hazards: occasional lifting to 20 pounds; long durations of sitting with use of computer terminal; use of sight abilities while reviewing documents; use of speech/hearing abilities for communication; mental alertness; must possess planning/organizing skills and must be able to work under deadlines. Field work will consist primarily of site walk downs in support of design projects and system trouble shooting. Site hazard training and Personal Protective Equipment are provided.
