General Description
Performs engineering work. Work involves job rotation, training and continuing education in design, construction, construction inspection, maintenance, surveying, environmental and/or transportation operations-related activities with the intent to actively pursue engineering licensing/registration through appropriate training and exams. Design activity is supervised by a licensed professional engineer who has authority for final approval of all projects. Work requires some contact with local governmental representatives, engineering contractors and private entities. [Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details].NOTE: All employees classified as Engineering Assistants are required to participate in the Engineering Assistant Career Development program. Participation in the Engineering Assistant Career Development Program ( EACDP) requires that employees sign a Program Agreement, which outlines employee responsibilities and service time commitment.

Duties
The essential duties for this job include:
  • Applies engineering principles, methods and techniques to a wide variety of transportation-related activities.
  • Assists during emergencies and inclement weather.
  • Assists in creating plans, specifications and estimates (PS&E).
  • Assists in performing construction inspections.
  • Assists in research and problem solving of engineering-related problems.
  • Assists with traffic analysis and data collections.
  • Assists with transportation maintenance-related activities.
  • Collects engineering data at project sites.
  • Performs engineering-related duties in the field of transportation engineering.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

Licenses and Certifications
The following Licenses and/or Certifications are required for this job:
  • Safety Impact Certificate
  • Valid Driver's License
Other Conditions:
  • All employees classified as Engineering Assistants are required to participate in the EA program. Participation in the Engineering Assistant Career Development Program ( EACDP) requires that employees sign a Program Agreement, which outlines employee responsibilities and service time commitment. Failure to comply with all terms of the Program Agreement will result in reclassification.
  • Degree in engineering which has been accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (TAC/ABET).
  • Degree in engineering technology which has been accredited by the Technology Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (TAC/ABET) plus two (2) years engineering related experience applicable to gaining licensure as an engineer by the Texas Board of Professional Engineers.
  • Degree in mathematical, physical or engineering science plus two (2) years engineering related experience applicable to gaining licensure as an engineer by the Texas Board of Professional Engineers.
  • Degree in engineering which has not been accredited by the Technology Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (TAC/ABET) plus two (2) years engineering related experience applicable to gaining licensure as an engineer by the Texas Board of Professional Engineers.
  • This is a Safety Impact position (either Safety Impact, Commercial Driver and/or Vessel Crew Member) and will be subject to random drug testing.
Conditions of Employment
  •  Safety Impact certifications are not required at the time of application. As required, the Safety Impact, Commercial Driver and/or Vessel Crewmember certification(s) will be issued by TxDOT at the time of hire.
  • Must pass a drug test prior to employment for commercial driver, safety impact and vessel crewmember positions. Commercial drivers, safety impact employees and vessel crewmembers will be subject to additional drug and alcohol testing during employment.
  • Required to work weekends and holidays.
  • Required to work hours other than 8 to 5.
  • Required to work under exposure to inclement weather conditions.
  • Required to wear personal protective equipment provided by employer and comply with all safety requirements.
