Assistant Road Superintendent

Graduation from high school or equivalent and five years progressively responsible experience in the construction and maintenance of public highways and streets, including three years of supervisory experience; or any equivalent combination of related training and experience. This position requires the completion of Microsoft Word 2010, Excel 2010 and Attention to Detail and  Email Etiquette, Following Directions, Business Communication and Logical Thinking assessments with a minimum score of "moderate knowledge". These tests can be taken at CareerSource North Central Florida (formerly Florida Works), located at 10 NW 6th Street, Gainesville, FL 32601. I also understand that I should call CareerSource North Central Florida at (352) 955-2245 to schedule an appointment or call the County Human Resources Office at (352) 374-5219 to confirm that my scores are already on file. Passing scores must be received by the Human Resources Office no later than 5:00 p.m. on the Thursday after the position closes. I understand that CareerSource North Central Florida is not responsible for submitting my test scores to the Alachua County Human Resources Office. All scores are valid for a period of 2 years from the date of testing. 

A valid Florida Driver License is required and a Motor Vehicle Record that meets the requirements of Alachua County policy # 6-7; Motor Vehicle Records will be reviewed prior to employment. If in the past 24-month period, the record shows more than 3 moving traffic violations, and/or a conviction/pending charge for driving under the influence, the minimum qualifications are not met for the position. Successful completion of a criminal history background investigation prior to employment. Applicants within six months of meeting the minimum education/experience requirement may be considered for trainee status.

 Position Summary: This is responsible administrative and supervisory work assisting the Director with providing direction for road construction and maintenance for the Department of Public Works.

This is an emergency essential classification. Upon declaration of a disaster and/or emergency, all employees in this classification are required to work.

An employee assigned to this classification is responsible for oversight of the Cityworks asset and work management system and assisting the Director in coordination and supervision of labor, maintenance crews and equipment while reconstruction, resurfacing and general highway maintenance work are performed.

Work is performed under the direction of a higher level supervisor and is reviewed through conferences, reports and observations of results obtained.

Oversees the Cityworks asset and work management system in order to effectively manage the department's operational needs.

Ensures that all data with Cityworks is maintained and work orders updated in order to track maintenance work orders from complaint to completion.

Utilizes GIS and Cityworks data to monitor risk and assist with informed operational decisions.

Supervises and coordinates the activities of subordinate supervisors and employees including determining work procedures and schedules; issuing instructions and assigning duties; reviewing work; recommending personnel actions; conducting performance reviews; and conducting departmental training and orientation.

Utilizes preventative maintenance programs for roads; makes frequent inspections of all highways to determine maintenance needs of surfaces, shoulders, structures, and drainage facilities; assigns employees to make such repairs.

Checks daily with various crews building, rebuilding and maintaining roads to ensure that work is proceeding according to plan; resolves any problems that arise.

Acts as field superintendent; plans, lays out and supervises all work including building and rebuilding bridges; installing culverts, laying and repairing pipe; dynamite blasting and deepening, cleaning and widening of canals and ditches; and spraying herbicide.

Meets with the public and answers any questions, requests and complaints regarding public works activities in the area.

Responds to requests for information and complaints from the general public.

Contacts local officials about maintenance and construction activities in their areas.

Drives a County and/or a personal vehicle to perform required duties to site locations and/or to attend meetings.

Performs the duties listed, as well as those assigned, with professionalism and a sense of urgency.
