Engineering Intern

As an intern within the Transportation Highway/Traffic discipline, you will work under the supervision of an experienced engineer. You can expect to gain real world experience, working on daily tasks and projects to complete technical assignments. You will develop skills in Microstation, support the preparation of contract documents, and conduct entry-level engineering assignments. You can expect to work on Interstate, local roadway, roundabouts, bicycle/pedestrian, and intersection safety type projects. You will be introduced to AASHTO a policy on Geometric Design of Highways and Streets, MDSHA design guides, the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, Highway Capacity Manual, and the Highway Safety Manual.

Interns will work a 40-hour week, with at least 10 weeks of work required during the period from mid-May to the end of August.  Interns are required to attend planned activities.

Responsibilities may include the following:
  • Assist in the development of plans, quantities, and cost estimates
  • Develop a working knowledge of Microstation
  • Develop technical reports and presentations
  • Develop technical understanding in design
  • Conduct entry level engineering, design and drafting
  • Conduct data analysis and reporting
  • Complete field assignments
  • Communicate with other design disciplines
  • Perform traffic counts and data collection
  • Perform administrative or office management duties
  • Attend technical meetings
  • Conduct intersection capacity analyses
  • Assist other Design Disciplines as needed
