Robotics for Engineer Operations

Description: The Construction Engineering Research Laboratory develops and infuses innovative technologies to provide excellent facilities and realistic training lands for the Department of Defense (DOD). Products and services from CERL research enhance the Army’s ability to design, build, operate and maintain its installations and contingency bases and to ensure environmental quality at the lowest life-cycle cost. Excellent facilities support the Army’s training, readiness, mobilization and sustainability missions. An adequate infrastructure and realistic training lands are critical assets to installations in carrying out their military mission.

Under the guidance of a mentor, the participant will collaborate with a multi-disciplinary research and development team in creating a modeling and simulation environment. The participant will research the interaction between multiple types of construction equipment by testing various types of simulated tasks. Finally, the participant will participate in the development of decision making algorithms based on the simulation results and apply those algorithms to actual scaled prototype hardware. 

Appointment Length: This ORISE appointment is for a 6 month period.  Appointments may be extended depending on funding availability, project assignment, program rules, and availability of the participant.

Participant Benefits: Participants will receive a stipend to be determined by ERDC-CERL. Stipends are typically based on the participant’s academic standing, discipline, experience, and research facility location. Other benefits may include the following:

Nature of Appointment: The participant will not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DOD, or any other office or agency. Instead, the participant will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment.
 
 Qualifications: The participant must be familiar with autonomous systems and the development of robotic construction capabilities.
