Utilities Engineer - Internship


Under direct supervision, the purpose of the internship is to receive on-the-job exposure and experience to learn how to perform a variety of duties for a specified department, job family and field of studies. Students assigned to this classification may perform both routine duties and non-routine support duties as the nature of the area of work and studies assigned. Emphasis is placed on providing varied, meaningful learning experiences to the student, while at the same time providing work assistance to the County. Assignment will provide entry technical engineering work by performing in the field and office in connection with investigation, development, design, construction and maintenance of County engineering projects.

 
EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Assists with reviewing plan submittals for consistency with departmental and industry standards
  • Performs preliminary in-house designs of utility or public works infrastructure utilizing auto cad.
  • Assists with identifying new and existing utility or public works infrastructure from as-built drawings.
  • Prepares construction progress charts for projects
  • Prepares preliminary engineering reports, environmental reports, permits, plans, and specifications
  • Interprets drawings, blueprints, survey reports, maps, aerial photography, soils reports, environmental reports and other topographical geologic data to plan projects.
  • Provides recommendations for system mapping for the assigned division / department of the County.
  • Assists with technical guidance and may answer questions regarding design and construction activities.
  • Performs basic administrative duties including written reports, memorandums, letters and electronic correspondence, interaction with the public and communication through telephone and meetings.

CLASSIFICATION SPECIFICATIONS:
Minimum Education and Experience:
  • Must be actively enrolled and attending accredited college / university
  • Civil or environmental engineering field studies
