PIP-II Integration Engineer (Mechanical Staff Engineer or Engineering Physicist II)

Come join a diverse team of talented and dedicated mechanical engineers, CAD designers, and technicians who make up the Accelerator Division’s Mechanical Support Department.  We are seeking a Mechanical Staff Engineeror Engineering Physicist II who is a collaborator by nature and who seeks out the latest technology and tools to design, fabricate, test, install, integrate, validate and operate the systems that support the future PIP-II accelerator. We use the latest technology such as ANSYS, NASTRAN, Siemens NX to model, simulate, prototype, and test our designs.  We work with vendors who stretch their technical abilities to fabricate the next generation of components and systems.  We expand our engineering skills, and sometimes write the textbooks, in order to operate the existing accelerators.      
You Will 
·       Utilize fundamental engineering concepts and principles to complete assignments and develop familiarization with the Laboratory’s method of project engineering, from the design stage through review, procurement, fabrication, installation, test and operation.
  • Be involved in the planning, implementation and documentation of the installation, integration, and validation of the PIP-II accelerator, a new superconducting linear accelerator being constructed in the 2020s as a major upgrade to the Fermilab accelerator complex.   
  • Be involved in the mechanical design, analysis, fabrication/construction, and installation of devices and equipment that support the PIP-II accelerator (such as magnets, collimators, RF cavities, beam instrumentation, and associated beam components).
  • Participate in and lead efforts involving general mechanical-system design, thermal-fluid system design, mechanical stress analysis, fluid flow analysis, and heat transfer analysis.
  • Be responsible for directing the activities of early-career engineers, drafters/designers, technicians and skilled trades on his/her projects
  • Integrate Environment, Safety, Health and Quality (ESH&Q) into requirements, design, and construction documents and processes
·       Direct the activities of co-op engineering students and interns on his/her projects.
·       Abide by and is responsible for performing all duties in accordance with all environmental, health and safety regulations and practices pertinent to this position. 
We Are Looking For
·       Bachelor or Master of Science Degree in from an ABET accredited institution in either
  • Engineering (Mechanical Engineering or closely related discipline preferred) 
  • Physics or Engineering Physics. 
  • Degree should include successful completion of coursework in systems design and/or integration, machine design, heat transfer, fluids and thermodynamics, mechanics of materials.
·       Minimum 3.0 GPA
·       3+ years of professional engineering, construction or engineering management, or accelerator operations experience.  Co-op engineering or internship experience is a plus.
·       Demonstrated ability in product or system integration 
·       Demonstrated ability to lead a team in a project (technical or non-technical)
·       Demonstrated ability to perform engineering calculations such as thermal and fluid system calculations and mechanical stress and deflection calculations
·       Demonstrated ability to create and read mechanical drawings, Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams and Architectural Drawings
·       Must have strong computing skills including preparing and documenting engineering calculations, data presentation, and project management activities (cost estimates, schedules).  Experience with fluids simulation software, FEA analyses, creating 3D models and 2D drawings using CAD software is desirable.  
·       Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly using verbal and written practices with customers / stakeholders and with team members
·       Demonstrated ability to work effectively under the requirements of schedules and shifting priorities
·       Demonstrated commitment to a quality-driven approach
·       Experience with integration of complex/large systems is desirable
·       Experience developing and implementing procedures and processes is desirable
·       Experience with management of subcontracted trades work is desirable
·       Knowledge of machine shop practices and techniques for fabricating complex and intricate hardware is desirable
·       Knowledge of welding and brazing practices (e.g. TIG and electron beam welding process, oven brazing) as related to manufacturing and fabrication of piping is desirable
·       Knowledge of materials, metallurgy and radiation damage of materials is desirable
·       Knowledge of operating particle accelerators and their auxiliary systems is desirable
·       Use of geometric, dimensions and tolerances on drawings is desirable 
·       Skills in Siemens Teamcenter and NX are desirable
