This Direct-Hire position is in the Food and Drug Administration and is located in the Office of Regulatory Affairs, Office of Regulatory Science.

  • Performs varied but relatively routine and limited chemical analyses and tests using procedures based upon previous assignments or instruction as to the specific analysis and tests.
  • Performs basic scientific analyses in support of higher level personnel.
  • Detects unusual reactions and instances when the established methods and procedures are not applicable, or the results of analysis are abnormal.

The Office of Regulatory Affairs, Office of Regulatory Science manages and conducts a cohesive, CFSAN mission-relevant research program, focused on regulatory methods development and validation, encompassing the recovery, detection, identification and quantification of microbial pathogens and chemical contaminants from foods, including dietary supplements, and for nutrition labeling requirements and the transfer of the technology to appropriate testing laboratories; the toxicology of cosmetic ingredients and contaminants; and the toxicology of dietary supplement contaminants, providing the laboratory science for the Center's regulatory, policy, and compliance and enforcement programs.

The position of Chemist falls under the 1320 occupational series. To qualify for this position at grade GS-7, you must meet the following:

Basic Requirements 
1.Degree: physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics.

OR 2.Combination of education and experience -- course work equivalent to a major as shown in A above, including at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
