Engineering Technician

POSITION PURPOSE
Under the direction of the Engineering staff and the Technician Supervisor, Engineering Technicians for spaceflight cryocoolers assemble and test cryocoolers, read mechanical drawings, schematics and other technical documentation, and interface with engineering, drafting, and machine shop personnel to complete assigned technical tasks.
 
CORE DUTIES (Must do functions)
1.    Following the direction of engineering and senior technicians, assemble and process components, subassemblies, and Stirling cryocoolers for aerospace production.
2.    Follow procedures and protocols for performing work functions in clean environments required for spaceflight hardware.
3.    Document and communicate test data and results in oral and written format, especially through accurate record-keeping in logbooks.
4.    Prepare test hardware and test equipment to enable testing of spaceflight cryocoolers according to customer performance requirements.
5.    Perform characterization testing of spaceflight cryocoolers to inform customers and meet performance requirements.
6.    Provide input regarding assembly and testing of spaceflight cryocoolers based on data and characteristics observed during assembly and test.
7.    Complete activities according to cryocooler build schedule.
 
ROUTINE FUNCTIONS (Lower priority than core)
1.    Participate in engineering and project meetings as required.
2.    Provide and review inputs to document technical procedures for tech transfer.
3.    Participate in lessons learned activities for continuous improvement of spaceflight cryocooler processes.
4.    Continuously develop skills through education, training, observation and mentoring.
5.    Provide input and documentation for communication with customers.
6.    As requested, travel within the United States to oversee subassembly processing, assist with hardware delivery and/or customer integration/acceptance.
 
REQUIRED EDUCATION
1.    Technician 1 – high school diploma, GED, or relevant technical training
2.    Technician 2 - technical college degree or equivalent experience
 
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE/CERTIFICATION
1.    Technician 1 – up to two years relevant experience or equivalent technical training
2.    Technician 2 – more than two years relevant experience
 
REQUIRED SKILLS
1.    Excellent mechanical aptitude.
2.    Familiarity with laboratory equipment, processes, and safety measures.
3.    Familiarity with performing functions in clean assembly areas required for spaceflight hardware.
4.    Experience reading graphical representation of hardware (mechanical drawings, shop sketches, schematics).
5.    Ability to read and use tools such as: calipers, OD micrometers, ID micrometers, multimeters, thermocouple meters, oscilloscopes, etc.
6.    Experience with various hand and power tools; wrenches, screwdrivers, pliers, dremels, etc.
7.    Basic mathematical knowledge.
8.    Attention to detail, especially regarding proper assembly techniques and clean, defect-free hardware.
9.    Maintain clean and organized work area that reflects proper attitude toward cleanliness of hardware.
10. Ability to receive and follow instruction/processes precisely and in a timely and efficient manner.
