2022-BWSO-001-Engineering & Regulatory Review Intern

The NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) enriches the environment and protects public health for all New Yorkers by providing 1.1 billion gallons of high quality drinking water, managing wastewater and stormwater, and reducing air, noise, and hazardous materials pollution. DEP is the largest combined municipal water and wastewater utility in the country, with nearly 6,000 employees. DEP's water supply system is comprised of 19 reservoirs and 3 controlled lakes throughout the system’s 2,000 square mile watershed that extends 125 miles north and west of the City.

The Bureau of Water and Sewer Operations (WSO) is responsible for the operation, maintenance and protection of the City's drinking water and wastewater collection (sewer) systems, the protection of adjacent waterways, and the development and protection of the Department's Capital Water and Sewer Design Program. Plan Review Unit staff analyzes the proposals for the development of private water and sewer infrastructure, large public or private development projects, and green infrastructure projects.

The selected candidate will be responsible to assist for reviewing, analyzing the designs to ensure compliance with DEP standards and engineering practices. Essential Duties and responsibilities: Under the supervision from the senior engineer, Summer Intern will utilize engineering, construction, DEP, and other standards and practices related to hydrology, hydraulics, structural engineering, and geotechnical engineering to analyze plans submitted to the Plan Review unit. Engages in research of existing water and sewer records, investigation, or studies to determine the extent of sewer infrastructure within the review area. Prepares written project reports and response letters.


Preferred Skills

- Student must be currently enrolled at a college/university at the undergraduate level majoring in civil, mechanical or environmental engineering. 
- Student must have at least a 2.5 GPA (on a 4.0 scale).
- Student must have at least a junior class standing.
