Educational Programs and Events Intern

PURPOSE: 
The Educational Programs and Events Intern at the Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science (Frost Science) will work alongside the museum’s education team to develop and implement educational programming related to the major exhibitions at the museum and other science-themed events. Science topics may include marine biology, ecology, health, neuroscience, engineering, astronomy, evolution, physics, chemistry, and biology. Interns will aid with the evaluation of existing programs and the development and delivery of new programs, finding exciting new ways to communicate the science behind our exhibitions to visitors. Applicants should have a strong background or interest in a relevant science field and a passion for science communication and education. The ideal candidate is pursuing a degree in education, science, science communication or a related field. 
This internship position participant will gain exceptional experience developing and delivering informal science programs for diverse audiences, including science-themed camps, shows, hands-on activities, workshops, demos, digital resources and special events. Eligible candidates must be enrolled in an academic program that will allow them to receive credit for completing this position. The duration of the position is based on the credit requirement.

SALARY: Unpaid, for academic credit.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: 
  • Aid with the background research and development of new programs for the museum. Topics may include a focus of marine biology, ecology, health, neuroscience, engineering, astronomy, evolution, physics, chemistry, and biology. 
  • Assist with the delivery of select programs developed for special events or event series as needed. 
  • Participate in brainstorming sessions with the education team.
  • Ensure programs enhance the content of the museum’s exhibitions while also meeting Next Generation Science Standards Big Ideas.
  • Conduct audience evaluations and identify opportunities to improve existing programs.
  • Perform other assigned tasks.

QUALIFICATIONS:  
  • Must be actively enrolled in a college/university and have a faculty advisor, or be enrolled in an internship program, to verify the hours and provide educational credit for the internship.
  • Interest in Frost Science’s mission.
  • Desire to work with children in an informal education setting. 
  • Background or strong interest in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) or Education field.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral.
  • Reliable and punctual, with good attendance.
  • Positive attitude and the ability to work well with different personalities in a fast-paced environment. 
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) or (English/Creole) a plus.
  • Must be 18 years or older.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL EFFORT:  
  • This position may require working with tools and chemicals using appropriate personal protective equipment.
  • Work is conducted in both an office setting and on the museum floor.
  • Lifting of program supplies and materials possible.
  • Must follow museum’s established policies and safety regulations.

CLEARANCE REQUIREMENTS:  
  • Level 2 background clearance as defined by the Florida Statutes/law 
  • Drug screening as part of the Drug Free Workplace Program.
  • Must have received or be willing to receive the COVID-19 vaccine(s) by date of hire to be considered for employment unless the applicant is eligible for an exemption pursuant to all applicable laws with the Human Resources Department.

SCHEDULE REQUIREMENTS:  
  • Must be able to commit to a minimum of 10 hours a week.
  • Availability on some weekends and evenings may be requested.
