2022-BWS-014-Water Treatment Operations Engineering Intern, South

The NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) enriches the environment and protects public health for all New Yorkers by providing 1.1 billion gallons of high quality drinking water, managing wastewater and stormwater, and reducing air, noise, and hazardous materials pollution. DEP is the largest combined municipal water and wastewater utility in the country, with nearly 6,000 employees. DEP's water supply system is comprised of 19 reservoirs and 3 controlled lakes throughout the system’s 2,000 square mile watershed that extends 125 miles north and west of the City.

The Bureau of Water Supply manages, operates and protects New York City's upstate water supply system to ensure the delivery of a sufficient quantity of high quality drinking water. The Bureau is also responsible for the overall management and implementation of the provisions of the City's $1.5 billion Watershed Protection Program and for ensuring the City's compliance with the provisions of the Filtration Avoidance Determination. The Croton Water Treatment Plant, at the Mosholu Golf Course, in the Bronx, New York, is providing filtration and disinfection of the Croton Water Supply System to New York City. The water treatment plant has a capacity of 290 million gallons per day and is designed as two process trains, 50% capacity each. College summer intern will be working out at the Croton Operations office located in Bronx, NY. 

The selected candidate will be primarily assisting the Engineering, Asset Management, and Operations teams with a variety of office and field-based projects. The selected candidate will help field verify equipment, conduct computerized maintenance management (CMMS) work, conduct inspections for operations, prepare drawings and specifications, upload data into a software program or spread sheet, assist engineers to manage contract work, and drawing and document organization. The selected candidate will be exposed to real-life engineering problems that will require an understanding of engineering fundamentals and projects scope and schedules.  

Preferred Skills

- Student must currently be enrolled at a college/university at the undergraduate level majoring in Civil or Mechanical Engineering with coursework engineering, project management and science.
- Student must have at least a 2.5GPA (on a 4.0 scale)
- Student must have at least a junior class standing
