Materials Tester (TT3, In-Training)

About WSDOT

The Opportunity
The SR 520 Bridge Replacement and HOV program (SR 520) and Alaskan Way Viaduct Replacement program (AWV) are highly visible and complex multibillion dollar capital construction programs consisting of multiple major projects in various phases of development. WSDOT is eager to hire a self-motivated professional to support our SR 520 & AWV programs in Seattle as a Materials Tester. This In-Training position will support these programs by supporting WSDOT’s Quality Verification Team on Design Build projects by testing and sampling construction materials. The incumbent will ensure accurate testing and sampling using testing equipment and established procedures. As the Materials Tester, this position is vital to ensuring that testing, sampling, and documentation of construction materials is accomplished efficiently and accurately while aligning with applicable rules and policies.
 
 What to Expect
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Materials Tester will:
  • Participate in the development of WSDOT’s Materials Test Plan that will ensure that WSDOT tests are randomly samples thus providing statistically viable test data for any statistically accepted material. 
  • Coordinate with the Design Build’s Quality Control and Quality Assurance staff on upcoming scheduled work that may require QV materials testing. 
  • Conduct audits to the Design Builders materials tracking efforts to validate and ensure that test frequencies are maintained for the quantity of materials delivered or handled at the jobsite and document and ensure that the materials used on the project are approved and documented in accordance with the Contract. 
  • Perform a variety of Inspections on work elements that include traffic control, bridge structures, environmental compliance, drainage, utility relocation, signing, pavement, marking, demolition, paving, striping, electrical ,Intelligent Transportation Systems, temporary shoring and permanent wall systems. 
  • Interpret Highway Construction Plans, specifications, and special provisions in the development of performance of inspections and quality verification audits. 
  • Complete Inspector Daily Reports on the performance of contract’s work. 
 
Qualifications
To be considered for this opportunity at the Transportation Technician 2 level, the following are required:
  • Graduation from high school or GED equivalent and two (2) years of experience performing basic technical engineering work as a Transportation Technician 1 or equivalent. 
  1. College level or vocational/technical course work in engineering, drafting, survey, mathematics or closely related fields will substitute for the required technical engineering experience on a year for year basis
 
To be considered for this opportunity at the Transportation Technician 3 level, the following are required:
  • Two (2) years of experience as a Transportation Technician 2 or equivalent semi-skilled technical engineering work experience, or Bachelors degree in Engineering, or Engineer in Training (EIT) certification. 
  • Qualified Tester Status in aggregate, concrete and hot mix asphalt density modules or the ability to obtain within three (3) months of hire. 
 
In addition, candidates at either level will have:
  • Current unrestricted driver’s license
  • Ability to read and understand contract documents such as special provisions, contract plans, and standard specifications. 
  • Ability to travel throughout the region to visit project sites and work nights, weekends, and/or extended shifts beyond standard business hours.
  • Ability to lift and transport up to 50lbs of equipment and materials. 
  • Ability to work at heights in excess of 50ft over land and/or water. 
 
It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:
  • Associates Degree in Civil Engineering Technology or equivalent
  • Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook
  • Experience in a lab and field environment testing materials
  • Current WAQTC qualifications for aggregate, densities, and HMA. 
  • ACI Concrete Field Testing certification
 
Important Notes

  • This position is not eligible for remote work.
  • This position requires the ability to safely operate a state-owned motor vehicle to travel to and from job sites throughout the region as needed. Travel outside of the assigned region may be required for training or other assignments. 
  • By issuance of proclamation, the Governor of Washington State mandates that all employees who work for executive cabinet agencies (which includes the Department of Transportation) must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. This is a condition of employment with WSDOT. Exemption may be granted for religious or medical purposes, however, accommodations will be subject to approval based on the essential functions required of the position.
  • The salary listed includes the legislative approved 5% salary premium for positions in King County. An additional general wage increase of 3.25% will be applied for all state employees on July 1, 2022.
  • This is an in-training position that offers a career path and on-the-job training. This position allows you to progress upward through the Transportation Technician field and achieve the goal class of a Transportation Technician 3. Candidates will be considered for a Transportation Technician 2 or Transportation Technician 3, depending on their qualifications. Annual salary levels for each position are:
  1. Transportation Technician 2: $51,445 - $69,224
  2. Transportation Technician 3: $58,300 - $78,334
