Fire Protection Engineer Associate - Denver Fire Department

The Denver Fire Department provides services to the citizens who live, work and visit the City and County of Denver providing fire suppression, emergency medical services, technical rescue, hazardous materials response, water and high angle rescue
 
The Fire Department of the City and County of Denver is seeking a Senior Engineering Associate for a wide variety of activities, including (1) performing plan review for fire alarm and fire sprinkler shop drawings (2) performing plan review for construction design documents for new and existing buildings and (3) conducting technical inspections of structures and occupancies.
 
The position is generally responsible for performing plan review work, providing front line services to customers and responding to code and process questions.
 
Incumbents are expected to possess the ability to apply an engineering approach and knowledge of the International Fire and Building Codes and NFPA standards. Provide advice and direction to professional engineers, architects, contractors, politicians, and other members of the public.
 
This position has extensive contact with other Fire personnel, and personnel from other city agencies, and members of the design and construction community, and requires a customer-service orientation.
 
The Fire Prevention Division provides for:
  • Fire and building code enforcement through plan review and inspections
  • Public Safety
  • Research and testing of new methods and technologies
  • Development of comprehensive technical reports
  • Recommendations of code amendments
Job Responsibilities include:

  • Conducts studies and/or investigations to identify hazardous/unsafe conditions and establishes priorities for contracts based on public safety and the most efficient use of available resources. 
  • Conducts detailed plan review of complex development and/or capital improvement construction plans and drawings to ensure accuracy and compliance with applicable laws, codes, design specifications, and standards, recommends adjustments/changes to bring plans into compliance, calculates charges and fees, and issues permits. 
  • Participates in the design and development of system components and utilizes computer modeling software in the preparation of construction plans. 
  • Assists in evaluating and analyzing various city systems to ensure systems are properly installed and maintained and recommends potential systems improvement. 
  • Coordinates work assignments with affected utilities, other city agencies, outside governmental municipalities, business and/or community groups, the public, and other stakeholders.  
  • Prepares various reports and maintains files and records related to the assigned area(s).

About You

The ideal candidate will have:
  • Experience in fire alarm and fire sprinklers as a designer, plan reviewer or inspector.
  • Knowledge in NFPA standards, IFC and IBC codes.
  • Must be able to read architectural and engineering construction documents.
  • Superior customer service skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Flexible and solution oriented
  • Preferred Certificates in one of the following:
  • Registration as an Engineer Intern issued by the Colorado State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers
  • NICET Level III Fire Alarm
  • NICET Level III Automatic Sprinkler Systems
  • ICC Commercial Fire Alarm Plans Examiner
  • ICC Commercial Fire Sprinkler Plans Examiner

Education requirement: Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or related field.
Experience Requirement: Three (3) years of technical engineering experience.
Education/Experience Equivalency: One (1) year of the appropriate type and level of experience may be substituted for each required year of post-high school education.

Additional appropriate education may be substituted for the minimum experience requirements.
License/Certifications: By position, requires a valid Driver's License at the time of application.

Licenses and certifications must be kept current as a condition of employment.
